Well, I decided to use my spare HDD for my second computer, I remove it, start up my standard machine, GRUB loads up (yuck) and gives me error 22. I immediately figure out why also..So, I turn of my XP system...set my spare HDD which has ubuntu on it, and load up XP.

Now that I know grub is a stalker, how do I get rid of it exactly? Already tried a few things, and I am currently downloading the ultimate boot CD..

Any suggestions? I am about to try the UBCD, and if it doesn't work, I am relying on all of you for help.

Sadly I do not have my win xp CD, never came with my computer, and I really do not want to have to pirate a copy.

fixmbr and fixboot from the recovery console are the best options here, doing it manually would mean you'd have to track down where the windows boot loader is stored and either copy it somewhere on the drive you're keeping and reconfigure grub so it knows how to look for it or overwrite grub with the xp boot sector using some special utility, but it's likely to do more harm than good if you don't know what exactly you're doing and it's still not guaranteed to work...

it might just be that switching the drives confuses grub so just fixing the config so it looks for windows on the first drive and not the second, but that'd mean you'd still have to keep grub...

If XP is on the first partition of the drive and grub is on a seperate partition then using a partition manager you can disable the boot flag on the grub partition and enable it for the xp partition and pray it works.

Linux is on the secondary drive, and grub on the standard drive, anyway, the UBCD4win did the trick. Fixed it quickly, hell the hardest part was burning the disk :p
