(so pretend i'm a new player and airing my first thoughts)

1) I've just done a group scout with other players. It was GREAT fun! They're all going out again, but being new, I took some damage so my car isn't going to be ready for 6 hours- so I guess I'll have to miss out and turn on my Xbox instead.

(ME: This if ******* crazy! I get the need for realism- but players want to PLAY. Surely it's not difficult to suspend disbelief a little and get new players up and running again ASAP?)

2) I want to do mail runs, and explore Evan a bit, but that means sometimes I have to wait a real day till I can use the same squad again.

(ME: This if ******* crazy! I get the need for realism- but players want to PLAY. Surely it's not difficult to suspend disbelief a little and get new players up and running again ASAP?)

3)I enjoyed the league race I just did- but everyone else was so experienced, that I didn't stand a chance, so I probably won't bother again.

(ME: leagues are called leagues cos there are different ones for different levels. We all have to give way to the masters everyday in real life. DW is a game. People love to win and compete- at whatever level)

4) My first decent gunner just capped at 82- what a bummer and waste of time.

(ME: Across the board, the minimum cap for every ganger should be 100. At least then you can cross train and end up with a  useable ganger after putting so much time and effort into them)

5) I like a challenge but the game sometimes is just TOO harsh.

(Me: It certainly is, but that's what makes it special. I have no idea how, but it's GOT to get a bit  'easier' for new players to come back every day)

6) It takes soooo long to get new gangers trained to be usefull.

(ME: town events need a training boost for EVERYONES gangers up to 50 at least)

I know I'm going to get soooo much flak from the hardcore vets for this but......

Frustation, boredom, hopelessness, crushing dissapointment, constantly asking why am I doing this- is what we have Jobs/wives/children for!
A game is for fun, and there are many other things to do if it's not enough fun.....

dont agree with the minimum cap thing at all. I have had perfectly useful cappers blow 100 (its actually a help in the SCL leagues) who crioss train. There are also training vouchers to push peole over cap

1) Thats why i keep spare loot ready to scout to give to new players, and also... what would you do?, let "new players" cars and crew teleport back to SS?. We could have "new players" to buy cars from npcs store without cooldown.

2) It's not that hard to get a phoenix or something but would be nice to have *any* (phoenix, sunrise?) enclosed 4l chassis for sale on SS npc market, it's a bit odd that selling phoenix to the npc pays reduced $ because of surplus... but then there is none for sale... with that, you can just do a DR or 2 and get your phoenix from the npc

3) Wait for Effy's guide to racing! (coming soon*)

4) NO new player is able to train his gangers to reach their cap, they all die a lot sooner than that.

5) Game is challenging, it's up to you to stand up for it. Yesterday i spawned a 2v12 event... i ran away and said... some other day will have the time for it.

6) Lies, a new player says.... its sooo hard to reach 50, ill never do it!

*********************

Would be nice having something done to help people trying the game have an easier entry to the game. Solo missions are a good patch, but adding an "if sentence" to the recruitment code like:
"IF you got no scout over 49, set scout skill level to 50" so they can afford to lose their scouts and try to learn the game going alone (if they want).

And about "new players" if you ask me i would define a "New player" everyone without a 100 gunner/large gunner.

I like your points here, and I support most of them. It sounds like you're wanting more immediate satisfaction for new players, and while I agree that would entice them to stick around, they'd be doing so on a false feeling of the game. If things are only quicker and easier when they're new, when they're no longer new they'll lose interest because the game starts to take time and get harder. That being said, if this were to be implemented regardless, who/what would define "new"? I think the happy medium has already been attempted in the form of tutorial missions, where new players can jump right into multiple scenarios with no risk of their own gear or gangers, and they even get rewards from them. This gives them a taste of what they can do in the game without requiring they sacrifice their own assets to give it a try. I genuinely believe that it will ultimately benefit a new player if they're not given an easy pass, since the game is supposed to harsh.

I agree that if we make things too easy for the beginners the game will not only lose its magic, but would also be an insult to those of us who worked so hard to train worthy gangers. But I do think access to more vehicles in the beginning wouldn't be out of the question. How about a "beginners" voucher for the first 30 days on a new account that gives free access tho the rental shop? Maybe some travel rental cars too :)

Cash and therefore vehicles are easy to obtain. The issue is generally skilled gangers.

I have given new players free cars as a solution but I can say from experience that most don’t want players to give them free cars.  Maybe they don’t want the “charity” or maybe they think it’s like a prison scam where you will want something from them later.

A possible solution would be to widen the rental car program.  Or make a way they can “buy” a car at Sarsfield Prices (cheap) and pay for it with a loan from the Death Race Mafia.  And if they can’t repay the loan maybe there could be missions to “work off” the debt (like they demand you assassinate someone or do racing for the mob type races)

It would open up some deeper dynamics while removing the “charity” factor

I’m against “speed ups” but my ideas about Dynamic Factions includes aspects of this that would alleviate this.  Specificly having ANY hex on the map act as a destination.

Imagine the option to take a mission in SS to deliver mail to Bubba Joe’s Ranch 1 hex out from SS (25-35 miles).  It would reduce mail runs from a matter of days (depending where) to increments more manageable.  It could even be factored in where Bubba Joe wants you to haul a side of beef over to his neighbor, and his neighbor also had a mission or three.  So you could go from settlement to settlement all the way to the next town.

That keeps the reality while dishing it out in shorter and smaller bites.

I don’t have any input for this one.  Player experience will always be an issue and we don’t have enough players to have “new only” races.

My first capper capped at 48
But I’m lucky to ever see anyone even make cap.  MOST of my guys cap under 100.

However, I agree 100 should be a minimum.

Brun said:

This has been discussed a lot over the years.  One thing that’s unique about the game for me is that when a ganger dies, I actually grieve.  That’s not something we get in other games.  Taking that away would be had painful as losing a team of gangers in a scout.

MAYBE the best approach would be to teach new players how to let go.  HOW to do that l, I don’t know.  Go look at the rage on the Steam forums for Battle Brothers...  where “losing is fun” is the motto made by the devs.  It created hate.

Brun said:

Mine never get trained.  They die long before that.  At first I tried to train them but eventually I resigned myself to the fact I would constantly be using unskilled gangers.  And I still am do the most part.  Probably why Redding my people isn’t an effective way to get revenge on me!

I think a more clear set of requirements for skill gain would help.  Like if we saw what percentage of the way the guy is to the next skill?

" town events need a training boost for EVERYONES gangers up to 50 at least"

I kinda agree with you on this.
If you are new, keeping a ganger alive long enough to spec in anything can be a hard road.

Now.....my 2 cents.

No, not for EVERYONE, new players only.
If you've been around, you SHOULD know what NOT to do to keep your folks on the green side of the dirt.

However, "new" REALLY needs to be redefined, because as it is, per what Sam has said on other posts, you are a "vet" after a rather few amount of scouts, and I don't think this timeframe is a realistic one as far as the learning curve of this game goes.

I would suggest that the number of scouts/events to leave "new" status be bumped up rather than time one has been in the game, for obvious reasons.

Player retention is a worthy goal. The chief complaint I seem to read about is the links to the web page from the game client. The web page links open in a steam overlay with a terrible UI. That webpage link should open in the user's preferred browser, IMHO.

players with bonus holes aren't going to last anyways :D i've drug a hundred people here over time, and nobody stays. My son plays, and even with streaming the game regularly to 100 people plus the game just isn't for everyone ... but for those who are looking for THIS kind of game, it's perfect.

i sell it as an MMO based on tabletop car wars. I also point out you get to yeet commies and take their stuff (showing them how redistribution of wealth works). I explain the chassis types and the plethora of weapons ... and how you can get out of your car and fight, or even get into an enemy's car and use it.

still nada :D

If you want new players go where people who would like this kind of game are. They will either love darkwind as the cruel mistress she is or go play something else :D

i'd recommend car wars forums, autoduel type games, etc. this community is helpful AF ... anyone who gets into this game and loves it will not likely ever leave for good.

Just rebooted my account so I'm re-learning a lot about the game but I think the biggest thing that made sense to me and impacted the game the least was the training bonus to 50 for new gangs. Gives them a chance to get their guys established rather quickly without having any real in-game impact on veteran gangs.

I'd also say the solo/tutorial missions that are already up are a very effective means of introducing new folks to the game and rewarding them with some valuable loot and gear.

I too have brought a few folks to the doorstep of DarkWind and received the "not for me". People like the concept but the roster management and turn-based action isn't their thing. Just introduced my brother to it, hopefully he digs it. My nephew RedFenders has been playing off and on since I showed it to him.

If you love it, you love it. If not it can be a hard sell.

only die-hard fans of turn based vehicular combat are willing to put up with the bugs and glitches. No matter what incentives are added, the rough edges are too rough for most people, including fans.
