"Haven't seen this hellhole in awhile," said Stephen Wallace, one of the 4saken's scouts. In tow was a greener, Sebastian Gosset. Sebastian was close on earning the nickname "Morpheus", like from the old vids, but only due to his looks, style of dress, and mannerisms. Stephen knew that "Morpheus" was just an act. Sebastian was learning, but he was still one of the worst shots Stephen had ever seen. And his overall confidence on the road was no help, either.

"Is that all you can say?", ranted Sebastian, "Is that all you can say? We just about rolled that box-full-of-holes into town, or slid rather, on what was left of those tires. Luck is all it was, man. You know what happened to Gregory, and he had way more experience driving that beast than you, my friend."

"Settle down. We made it didn't we? Who could have predicted three ambushes and a phoenix with a laser? Anyway, Rubberpants and the rest of them are supposed to be here. Let's just grab some beers."

Sebastian ruffled the collar on his black trench and regained his composure a little.

Yeah, sure, they had both almost died, in more or less the same damn vehicle (a souped up box van) that had claimed Greg and Frenchy. But it could be worse. Rubberpants and a couple of greeners were stationed in Gateway and almost never got to see any action.

Stephen didn't know what was worse, being stuck doing nothing or having a nickname like "Rubberpants", and poor Clarence had to deal with both.

Stephen would wait on his nickname. I'm not getting something like that on my tombstone, no way, sir.

Stephen and Sebastian set aside their differences, tapped mugs, and drank. The others would be here soon enough, and the desert has a way of making a man thirsty.
