John Brown sat on the smoke-blackened bumper of a wrecked Phoenix and stared. On the ground, what remained of Tammera ?The Hammer? lay lifeless. One of John?s hands limply held a wrench, barely keeping it in his grasp; the other tightly clutched locks of his own red hair.

?Come on, John,? came a voice from behind him. The voice, that of gang leader Hunter, rasped like reverberations from a badly worn v8 motor. The croaky voice deflated the leader?s normal ice-like tone, but his mere presence maintained his authority. ?We need to get what spare parts we can and get back on the road. That Mutie might be coming back for us with bounty hunters any minute.?

John scoffed and did not move. The corpse was missing its head, and the black-seared flesh that remained could hardly be distinguished from the blackened crater in the ground.

Hunter walked closer, wheezing in air heavily as he walked. Numerous bits of shrapnel, ranging from pinky-sized to baseball-sized, stuck out from his chest. He grabbed the curly-haired man by the shoulder. John violently shook off the touch, turning his face to Hunter with his face matching the color of the sand. ?Why did she hafta get out of the car?? he half sobbed, half yelled, as if hurling an accusation directly at the gang leader.

Hunter allowed the mechanic to stare him down. For once, John refused to back down. ?You can?t do anything for her now,? Hunter finally said. ?Let?s just put together whatever?s working and get the Hell out of here.?

The shorter man stood up from the bumper and tossed his wrench to the ground. ?How am I s?ppos?d to put her back together, eh, chief??

Hunter remained calm, but his breathing was becoming more ragged each time he inhaled the irradiated, dusty air. He pulled a small object from his pocket and brought it up to his lips. His fingers pressed down and he inhaled deeply. A satisfied sigh followed, and he dropped the object to the ground as his eyes rolled up into his head for a moment. When his eyes settled back down, Hunter finally responded. His voice remained raspy, but came forth without the noticeable pain it had caused just moments before.

?We all lost something today, kid. I have to go back and tell Brad his brother?s dead, and this scrap we?re bringing back will barely pay for repairs.? Hunter looked off into the distance, as if talking to himself, not John. ?I tell you one thing, this is the last trader hunt we do for awhile. It just ain?t worth the effort.?

Hunter turned his back on John and took a step away, then stopped. ?Life is short, and cheap,? he said without turning around. ?You can?t count on anything lasting forever. But my guess is deep down you don?t really want to join her just yet, so you?ll get these motors running and get us out of here like you always do.?

John wiped his face with the back of his hand as the gang leader walked away, then retrieved his wrench and followed.
