I finally finished watching all three of the "Mad Max" movies, although I ended up watching them out of order, because I didn't realize Mad Max II was alphabatized under The Road Warrior at Blockbuster.

Obviously I can see how this whole genre (i.e. Darkwind, et. al.) was influenced by the Road Warrior in particular. I found myself really excited about all the different possibilities from that movie that I would love to see here, despite the impossibility of the physics for some of them: the boomerang ped weapon, the tire shields for the big rig, targeting tires, the mounted multi-crossbow gun (or is this the flechette gun?), turrets on top of the vehicles, and, of course, the gyrocopter!

Overall my opinion is that the movies were good but number 3 was all over the map and hard to follow, and I got bored with the second half of the movie. And in number 2 I didn't really like Max's character - he was a sumbich over and over, even though it seemed like he was being heroic in the end, it still didn't seem like he had much compassion for anyone but himself!

Well, that's it. I just wanted to declare that I've finally seen these "classic" movies almost 30 years since they came out... :)

I liked it, but more for the franchise and not so much for the movie itself. I was also 17 or 18 when it came out, and I was anxious for ANYTHING MM related... :-)

It was more "hollywood" and Ogilve and less Miller, plus Kennedy was dead by this time, so it didn't have his influence.

That was intentional... He learned the hard way that no man is an island... The opening montage shows us WHY he's so hard and cold, and I think it works.

I still go back to them every so often, but more so since playing DW. I don't care much for the DW music, plus I play at home with the TV on, so sound is no big deal. If I'm alone and want music I listen to the soundtracks from MM & MM2.

I think the madmax movies were style over substance. Not very good plots, dialogue etc. but plenty of atmosphere and great props. And that's ok with me, I enjoy films on that basis. (Waterworld would be the same, IMO, despite having an annoying git in the lead role).

As one of the wacko hard core fans I could discuss the the idiosyncrasies of the films all day. As Sam says, "style over substance." Purely hardware films. Of course that is the attraction. Who doesn't love a blown Ford Falcon?
In MM2 Max is the reluctant hero, a 'burned out shell of a man'. He has lost everything and unwilling to get close to anyone to avoid further loss in a world gone mad.
There are many who wish Thunderdome had never been made. I believe the loss of Byron Kennedy (co-producer) left a creative void that allowed the story to meander. That and a low budget Australian film series that gets pumped up with the Hollywood influence. It has it's redeeming moments but your opinion is pretty much spot on.
I think it's interesting to note that George Miller (creator/producer/director) went on to later create "Babe" (the talking pig movies) as well as "Happy Feet". Quite a departure eh?

Now those would have been better if Babe drove a falcon or the penguin was attacked while driving a tanker. I think they could have worked that into the story. ;)

Dead Alive and Bad Taste are gospel.

Mad Max is definitely style over substance like said before, a straightup exploitation flick. but when it's got style for miles, you can't deny how great a flick it is. I reccommend the Vestron Video VHS release - its got a high-contrast washed out film transfer, and they overdubbed all the dialog with American-accented voice actors. normally I don't dig on stuff like that, but all the American voice actors sound way, WAY over the top - the police chief and Toecutter, especially.

While we're on the subject of 'stinkers'... how many of you have seen 'Warriors of the Wasteland"? It's a post-apoc flick I bought a few weeks ago at Wal-Mart in the $1 section lol... the golf carts they drive around in that movie make an Estate look like a bad ass tank!

PS. I thought Babe was a damn fine movie by the way.

I'm big into trading and collecting video trash, and the euro-schlock Mad Max ripoffs all consistently RULE. I've been meaning to make a post with reviews and screencaps of a few of the best. Check out The New Barbarians, Escape From The Bronx, After The Fall Of New York and 2020 Texas Gladiators if you're jonesin' for more. beer helps.

Yep, awesome pictures! Btw. its based on the novel "Roadside Picknick" which is free to download on the net! The game Stalker based also on this novel. Its maybe 150  pages and a nice read!

Oh, and BrainDead is one of the best movies ever! ;)

Yeah Stalker is great, it was actually shot close (~40km) to where I live.

I rewatched it a only few months ago (last time I saw it I was a kid). It was a welcome break from the usual hollywood-style stuff and the memorable scenes (esp near the beginning) were at least as good as I remembered them.

Solaris (1972 version), by the same director is also worth checking out, though that's sci-fi.

Rectify that immediately! Death Race 2000 is one, if not the, best movies by Roger Corman. You'll cringe when you realize Stallone has played the same character in ALL his movies...

one of his first movies, not the first. i had no idea he was in any other movie, party at kitty and studs?? lol

there are 3 movies listed in 1970, one unconfirmed if he was in it or not.

stallon was in another movie with woody allen. bananas (1971)

i remember renting deathrace 2000 when i was a kid when vhs was king and the local video store was better than the chain stores. i just watched whatever movie had a good cover and deathrace 2000 just looked good.

I just heard about The Road

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0898367/

Quote:
A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and, when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing: just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food--and each other.

It looks/sounds pretty gritty and something I'll keep an eye on.
