First off I know darkwind is very unique, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good games in other genres that are similar. What I mean is games with really in depth strategic combat.

I remember growing up playing lots of car wars but there was another that was good was Star Fleet Battles. I know there are a million space games out there but anything where its a persistant world (or universe) , multiplayer, with in depth combat and movement like Darkwind ?

Another genre I would like to see strategy put back in is fantasy style games. They seem too caught up in fancy graphics they forgot the old style games where you had to use turn based strategy. Probably the last great strategic rpg was Baldurs Gate series and Icewind Dale series. wondering if there are any persistant multiplayer fantasy RPG style games where the focus is strategic combat, turn based. And I dont mean MUDs I mean more like darkwind where you manage things on web based type pages but have a graphical representation of combat and action.

I have a feeling that just like Darkwind.. these type games would be niche based being that most people dont have the patience for turn based strategy anymore, but feel free to post if you have found anything out there that has engaging strategic turn-based combat like darkwind, regardless of the genre.

For turn-based RPGs I'd reccomend trying out some roguelikes, my favourite is ADOM. I think there was one called the Guild which let you control several characters at once.

For space games I really liked Master Of Orion 2, It's essentially Civilization in space with instanced tactical combats and you can customize your ships with weapons and gadgets.

There's also the old turn based classics: the Fallout, X-COM and Jagged Alliance series which most people here have probably played.

I can't really help you on the multiplayer/mmo games, but there was something called Laser Squad Nemesis appearantly by the XCOM creators, but I haven't really played it though it's been around for a while.

Laser Squad Nemisis is a play by email turnbased game...both players submit orders then watch the out come of those orders in the next email. 3 or 4 races to play and 5 or 6 units per race

I spent a few years playing it back in the day when it just came out of Beta. Julian Gollop is a bit of a legend imho and the game is definetly worth a try if it sounds like something you might like

there are still alot of turn-based strategy games out there, but the problem is the MMO part. when there is a turn, there is waiting. and most people aren't going to go for that. turn-based is very hard to integrate with real-time requirements for that reason, so there aren't going to be that many games like DW. (kudos to Sam again for pulling off the impossible)

there are getting to be alot more squad-based style games that happen in real-time, and if someone was to make an MMO version of this it would be possible, but the gameplay would be rather odd. still it might be possible to come up with a circumstance where this would work. even so, with real-time pressures there's not as mich time for tactics.

i did see a sci-fi game once that was a strategy game that takes place in an MMO. you take your turn pretty much by yourself, but between turns your vessel occupies the space where you left it in and can be seen by other players. so, it's mostly single-player but the MMO aspect will affect things like trading since if you're heading to a far destination another player could get there first and buy everything out. i forget the name of it, and it's mostly a trader-type game, but i could probably find it again if you're interested.

A lot of it boils down to what type of game genre you are aiming at, I came to Darkwind from another turn-based tactical game with a larger strategic metagame as a background - where I met Zothen in another disguise.

If you liked classic Battletech then try www.megamek.net - all the links you need should be there.

I started playing Eve Online. Burntoast is playing also. Anyone play it yet? Im just doing the free 14 days right now. Steep learning curve like DW...keeps the 10 year old away...except for the genius ones of course(flamingsaveage!)
If you play it, Im the noob Dexter Longo.

There is a good review of Eve Online here: Zero Punctuation Review of Eve Online

And you might want to consider UltraCorps:

"UltraCorps is a turn-based massively multiplayer game of space exploration and combat. Starting with a single planet, you can expand your empire to dozens and even hundreds of worlds. But hundreds of other players are building their empires, too. The universe is so big that you'll never meet most of them except in the game forums . . . but you still compete against them for number of worlds conquered, total power of your fleets, and so on."

It's from Steve Jackson Games (makers of Car Wars), although I've never actually played it.

This conversation reminded me of an old game I used to play what is now called EV Nova by Amvrosia Siftware. Not an MMO, but a compelling game of do missions for money, build a better spaceship kind of thing. Enjoyably addictive, although it's not turn based.

i wouldnt mind something simple and sci-fi hopefully mad-maxey but i'm flexible. something like a flash game where i can be lazy and just use the mouse. or arrow keys to drive and space bar to fire! whee!!

i used to love the game Spy Hunter in the arcade. look, ma, cars with guns! but every port of it to a console has suffered from awful controls. would be awesome with a mouse-based control, i think.

edit: just found a version but kinda junky. very hard to live more than a minute. also just found a bunch of flash games on a place called owensworld.com. racing ones in there, too.

edit 2: wow. been awhile since messed with the flash stuff. i forgot about games with instructions like "Move arund with the arrows and shoot with space. Try not to die."

Ahh, Escape Velocity... I played those three when they first came out, and periodically go back and play them again.  Lots of fun, and you're right, aside from the real-time, single player, different setting, single main character, etc, they do remind me of Darkwind.  (No, really, that wasn't sarcasm.  Though maybe it should've been.)

There was talk for a while of an EV Online, but it never went anywhere.

If you're cool with real-time action stuff you could try hard truck apocalypse, if you can ignore the bugs and horrible translation / story it's actually a fun game imo. It even has a decent amount of vehicle customization.

Yeah, I played Hard Truck Apocalypse. Good premise, lots of bugs, horrible translation (ex. one town asks you to neutralize a "treat") and no customer support. I wish someone would make a better done, more open ended version of that. (but for 10 bucks, not a bad game the first 1 or 2 times.)

I've been playing Eve Online for awhile and in fact letting my subscription run out in lieu of DW! Very very deep game where it seems you spend more time reading about the game & strategies more than actually playing it.

I swear if Sam implemented a few of the concepts in EVE Online, I would be overjoyed.

I Tried Eve online and Lord of The Rings Online. I hear ya on Eve. I played it about 20 hours and then quit. LOTR online is just like WOW but different graphics and an extra few neat things.

Have you ever played Allegiance?

It's part space combat sim, part real-time strategy.

Each team has a number of pilots, piloted by human players, and a commander. The pilots are in charge of killing enemy pilots and capturing resources, which then get put to use by the Commander.

It's a pretty complex game, and I never really got too much into it. But, It's the closest thing I can think of, innovation wise, to DW.

There's a new Xcom style game in 3D being worked on, it's not finished, but  it's multi-platform, mac pc, and linux i think

It's called UFO Alien Invasion, and it's prety ambitious, with even a net-work play agains another player and the computer online, althought that's really buggy on the mac for me.

I enjoyed it a lot, too bad it's not finished, but for those that like a hard game, it's comparable to DW, and w/ more micromanagement.

http://ufoai.sourceforge.net/

and then there's Fallout 3 which isn't out yet :gasp: will need a new state of the arts computer for that one... But it looks insanely addictive!

Bah, I was willing to give Fo3 the benefit of doubt, but after seeing the gameplay videos for Fo3 I'm now convinced it won't reach the level of the original games, at least not for me.

I tried UFO AI over a year ago I think and it looked pretty promising even back then.

Another UFO-Clone I haven't gotten around to actually trying out is UFO: Extraterrestials. It looks beautiful from the screenshots.

Also I remember something called Abomination: The Nemesis Project which was similar to XCOM in the sense that you fight off a genetic virus or something along the lines (It's been a while since I played it) that turns everyone into horrible mutants.

It had research, RPG elements and all that and it was the first game I played that had pauseable real-time combat (exactly like in Baldurs Gate). I didn't like the combat that much, just like I didn't like it in BG and I can't remember how good the rest of the gameplay was, but I remember that I really liked the setting.
