It was all bad. Way too many of them, and a head-on. They came out of nowhere. And a great spot, on a downhill, hard to turn, too many to attack.

And Nick Currier was just a passenger. All he could do was hold on and shut up. They finally got the v8 Apache turned, so that it's rear HMGs could bear, but the enemy was too close already.

Then the rockets started raining in. So many rockets pounding off the armor. Nick knew it would not be long. Why did he volounteer for this crap? Ah well. So this is how it was going to be.

It was a wild ride, though. Must have been 5, 6 rockets all at once. The blast was enough to throw the 'pache into the air. He could look through the front windscreen and see the ground. Everything started to slow.

Still in the air, the next volley of rockets started to find their mark, ripping through the underside armor in short order. Blood, chaos, bits of metal and flesh. Deafening noise and screams and yelling. They were literally being tumbled through the air, there were so many rockets, like a Sonic when the bumper catches the ground during a heavy volley. He didn't think he would ever experience that first hand. And not from inside an Apache.

They were beat to a bloody pulp but the pirates attention were elsewhere. Somehow Mister Crowley used the vehicle's rolling momentum to gain some speed down the hill, right at them. But at least there was still some armor on the front.

Pot-shots, and he got to see the pirates pass by him, one by one, chasing the boxer. Except the Punisher. He had other plans.

By some miracle Crowley snuck past them, using his momentum and knowing they would lose valuable speed trying to turn to chase, what with the terrain that way it was. Nick started breathing again. Time returned to normal.

Then the car rifle rounds started hitting. Armor failed, bullets found their way inside, with predictable results. But Crowley was persistent. And the shots were coming from farther and farther away.

They were going to make it.

... Home free once we got to the crest of the hill. But Crowley pushed the vehicle to its last. As it hit the hill, all the speed fell away. All the v8 was doing was spitting smoke and making horrible grinding noises.

Crowley looked back over his shoulder at everyone. Kacie and Rhonda were dead or unconscious. Even the famed 'Cajun Joe' was slumped in his seat, a bloody mess. Crowley had somehow made it through mostly intact, and I was at least still conscious.

"We're going to make it," he said, as he turned the wheel to try the hill in switchbacks. "We can still do this," he insisted, as he caught a car rifle round through the forehead and his brains blew out the back.

I was in shock, but somehow I was aware of my body reverting to my training as I found myself taking over driving. Just as I clambered forward a second round finished the engine, just like that. It was over.

With nothing left to do I jumped. I looked back one last time and made for the hills. I found a crack in a rock and crawled in. I couldn't see what was going on outside, but I could hear it. The pirates were just laying into the wreck, making sure nothing - nothing - lived. It seemed to go on forever...

Next thing I remember it was cold. I woke from my nightmare. But I woke up under that rock, dragged myself out. Rather than being eaten or dying from my wounds, starvation or exposure I somehow spotted a squad headed back.

So here I am.

So, ummm, could I have that drink now?
