We've all been playing together for a few days/weeks/months now, so we all sort of know each other. But we don't know each other well, so I thought an introduction thread might be fun.

I'm Matt, a twenty-something Canadian writer/ice cream scooper (currently on vacation). I live in Ottawa, Ontario. I'm a recent Switcher - I replaced my grumpy PC with an Intel Mac mini that is so much nicer to use. My online nick - Korivak - is the last name of a family of recurring characters in my fiction, first used way back when I was in high school. I liked the name, so I 'borrowed' it. It's great because it's pronounceable (more or less...I do sometimes get a 'Core-vee-ack') and never in use anywhere.

I'd play a lawn mowing game as long as it was turn-based, so getting hooked on a turn-based deathracing MMO was pretty much a given. I also play low sys req PC games on my Mac using Boot Camp, and I own a Nintendo DS, PS2 and Gamecube - I had an Xbox, but a former roommate stole it to pay for bus fare to Alberta. Besides Darkwind, I've recently been playing a lot of DEFCON (http://everybody-dies.com/) and Final Fantasy III DS (not the Terra-and-Espers three, but the other one).

So, who are you?

Nice idea, a corporate ice-breaker  ;)

Actually it's funny how snippets of info come across in different chats you have with people over a period of time. So I know varying amounts about some of you.

I'm a thirty-something Irish university lecturer, 4th in command in my house (wife + 2 kids outrank me) but hey! the dogs are still bottom of the pecking order.

Making games has always been my thing; right back to when I was 5 or 6 I used to make these crazy boardgames with rules and dice and stuff. So when home computers hit the world it was a natural thing to learn enough programming to start making the kinds of games I like. I guess you can probably tell the kinds of game I like: basically horrendously detailed rules-based games (and computers can add another great dimension to those, because of their sheer book-keeping ability).

I wouldn't specifically go for turn-based games, but I do like strategy type 'thinking' games rather than reactions-based games. The best computer games ever for me would be Civilisation and Ultima VII Part II. Mind you I haven't played computer games much lately.. from what I can see they're even less inventive than ever though.

The ideas behind Darkwind are equal parts Cars Wars, MERP, with some vague economy-based simulation game idea (Sim City I guess), and of course thematically influenced by Mad Max and Judge Dredd. The other influence you might never guess- it's a soccer managerment fgame called Hattrick which (wait for it) runs to a real-world timescale and limits the amount of time you need to spend online each week to compete (great for us family guys).. it's called Hattrick and Clarinbridge City are currently top of the Irish Premier League (although on the verge of bankruptcy).

We should rename this thread 'life, the universe and computer games'

I'm Ben. I'm in my early/mid twenties, married, and have a child on the way. I'm a bartender at a restaraunt in Omaha, Nebraska (U.S.), but I'm searching for anything that can get me out of this rut and into a "real" career.

Outside of my lovely job I have a million interests. I've always been a bit of a country boy in all things but music. I was raised on a farm and still can't stand living in a city, which is why I found myself a nice little plot of land outside of the freakish glow of the big city. I spend a lot of time gardening during the warmer months, and I have a small flock of ducks and chickens. One day, maybe, I'll even get some goats and more birds.

I've been a gamer for a long time. It all started when I got a Nintendo for my 6th or 7th birthday. It hooked me from day one. Since then I made the progression through the Super Nintendo, took a break, then hit the PS2 and, most recently, the PS3. I've also been a Macintosh man since 1989.

My gaming interests are almost as eclectic as they get. I'll play anything from a sports game to a racing game to a RPG and beyond. There have been two game series that have had my undying love since they were developed. Those would include the Final Fantasy series and Gran Turismo. I've loved the deep stories and strategy-based game play of Final Fantasy (though I think they've gotten a little straight-forward lately). And I love the gearhead mindset and incredible customization available in Gran Turismo. Darkwind is, to me, about as good of a hybrid as I can imagine. Toss in the online aspect and the great community and I've found a game that is perfect for me. Keep up the good work, developers.

Of course there are volumes more to know about me, but since I have a tendency to be a little longwinded, (due, I think, to the very large number of reports with minimum lengths that I had to write for my History degree) I will end it here. See you on the track.

First, I don't speak English very well, so be smart please !

I'm Lucas, a French 16 years old guy (Deh!), living in Nancy, in the East of France.
I was born in a Macintosh with my dad, and soon tried games... like Full Throttle, Carmaggedon, or A-10 Cuba, my first one! Then grew up, and, tested the Quakes series, Duke Nukem, and all the Age of Empires series...
I've been recently playing Uplink, Sauerbraten, and modding for Medal of Honor.

About my interest, all thoses greezy stuffes of Teenagers, Mac, Web. But I read books too, fantasy, historical, and thrillers...
I'm currently studying for an 'Econimic and Social' degree (No please, vikk, don't kill me!), and looking for a job in Multimedia sector... like Webdesign, Infographist etc...  [If no possibilities, then, why not in Army with Telecom sector :P]

For technical info, i'm currently playing on an old G4 400 PPC boosted with an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb. PPC rules 'em all! ;)

Here, It's simply me.

I neglected to mention where my name comes from...silly me.

Paranoid Tourist is a simple combination of two Radiohead songs from O.K. Computer: Paranoid Android and The Tourist. I first adopted it some time ago when I was in college and needed a screen name for something else. Paranoid Android was taken so I went ahead and threw a couple of names together, adding a smidgen of uniqueness to an otherwise stolen title.

Hooray for sneaky Radiohead references.

Additionally, one of the games I mentioned - DEFCON - is made by Introversion Software, the company that made Uplink.

I also neglected to mention a few other things that other people have reminded me of. I?ve got lots of pets - five cats, a giant black dog and assorted birds and reptiles. I?m also going to college part time, learning American Sign Language.

Like a few people I've met here, I'm a long time fan of the "Car Wars" table game.
I'm 40 something and enjoy long hours spent at home with my cat, (I'm on disability). I used to drive trucks (18-wheelers) for a living before an accident forced me to rely on disability. Needless to say I get to spend more than enough time on the computer! hehehe

My favorite games (before finding DW) were strategic flying games like Falcon 4, F-18 and A-10 Cuba. Lots of RPG games have gotten some play too!

I live in Richland, Washington. (Formerly known as Hanford) In the SE corner of the state. Where the atomic fuel for the two bombs dropped on Japan were processed. The detonators and bombs themselves were processed and made in Oak Ridge Tennessee.

I am divorced but always on the look out for a future Ex-wife! :o

I have REALLY enjoyed the talk and racing with the other players here. I'm glad to be part of it all!

Sorry to read that JD.
Though you might enjoy when will have trucks in game then!  :cyclops:

We have the same game references. A10 was really kicking.
I tried to had a deal with Parsoft to license their game engine in '96. Then they slowly went away... Fighter Squadron was their last known game (and on PC).
F4 is really the hardcore game. I still haven't managed it.

Viking...
If you'd really like to get the hang of F4...
Browse my site.

I'd be glad to help you get you through the missions while flying the campaigns.

My name (Basher) came from the now retired online Falcon 4 squadron "36th Flying Fiends"

The 36th Fighter Squadron performs air interdiction, close air support, and counter-air missions with LANTIRN (Low Altitude and Targeting Infrared for Night) equipped fighters at Osan AB, South Korea.

Thanks to you Sam, Vikk and others!
You have made a game I have hoped would be realized for a long time possible!

A huge ATTABOY and GOODONYA to all!

Nice site. Will be useful when I'll get back in F4.
I need a new stick anyway. I was running the PC version and my controller was not an USB one. It was a Microsoft Sidewinder, and even if I'm in general bashing them for their softwares (and mostly so called OS), they do have really good hardware.

Darkwind is top priority so I'm not expecting to play it until years  ;)

Well, I don't like talking about me, in general and mostly if you don't have paid me a glass of something before ;-)
I'm a quiet guy, until I decide it's good time for some philosophy... then you can't stop me. But it has not happened for years. :stare:

I'm French, like DjFou and a few others. Father of 3, married, sorry girls! ;)
To my despair I'm belonging to the 35-45 age class.
I don't understand, because I took a look at a few photos dated from 1990, and yeah, it's me on it, I'm young! What's wrong?

Computers and pen and paper RPGs are more than half of my life. I've been a game master for nearly 10 different games.
I also played and enjoy wargames with very accurate and detailed rules.

Car based games are not my favourite ones, but this game. I've been addicted the first time I played.

I studied Social Sciences and Economy too, Dj... Hope it will lead you where you want.

Ronin is a japanese word, it means rogue Samuraï. Samurais without masters (daïmyo in japanese) where named like these. Apart that side, Ronins were also bound to the Bushido (Samuraïs rules of conduct). Ronins were wandering from town to town, trying to initiate duels with others to gain honor and respect through their reputation of duellers.
One of the most famous and greatest Ronins was Myamoto Musashi.
You can find his life in a novel form (in French, sorry I don't know the english title): "La pierre et le Sabre" et "La Parfaite Lumière" (I am still voiceless on how French translators are modifying titles from movies and novels...).

The movie used that term and referred to Robert DeNiro as a Ronin, a rogue samuraï serving with honor a distant Daïmyo: USA. Nice movie BTW, very impressive shotguns and driving.

Very interesting and eclectic mix of people we have here. Nice to meet you all! :)

I'm a 36 yr old guy living in Portland, OR. A bit down the road from JD in fact. Just had a kid - she's now 5 months old, have 2 dogs, one wife (first and hopefully last). I work in advertising. Hey, there's worse jobs out there. Maybe two anyway ;)

Truncated Gaming History:
Started out with a pong game from a garage sale when I was about 8, soon graduated to an Atari 2600. Spent most of my spare time in arcades (pinball is the best ever!) Discovered Car Wars in college and enjoyed it a lot, but not too many people to play with. Switched to Might and Magic where I played it all summer just to find out the last 3.5" floppy was bad. Being a mac guy, I played a ton of Marathon, then Quake after college. Finally bought a PS, then a PS 2 - for GTA series alone. Best games ever.

Nowdays, I don't have time to play many games, but somehow I manage to squeeze a few (too many) in. I love DW since it's an RPG, but you can jump on and play whenever. And it's so cool to be part of a community like this and be able to help take an awesome game to the next level. :cyclops:

I bought GTA3 before I even owned a PS2, actually.

A group of us stopped at a video game store on the way to a friend's house for an evening of gaming, and I pointed out GTA3 on the shelf. The friend that was hosting the get together that night said he was going to eventually get it, but not right away. Without missing a beat, I pulled out my wallet and bought the game on the spot, and we all took turns playing until the early morning hours.

When Vice City came out, I again swooped in and grabbed the game on the very first day, but I had a PS2 of my own by that point.

My turn I guess :cyclops:

Let's see, 32 year old Canadian born and raised in Montreal (party central of Canada ;)) English is my first language tho I can get by in French (funny i seem to be better after a few drinks :p) I drive forklifts and do the ol shipping/recieving bit after a disapointing stint in college (I said pure and applied not sot social sciences damn you!)
Still single despite my friends' best efforts ;)

My gaming obsession started when i picked up my dad's hand held Pong game when I was 5 and my first PC game was MS flight sim 1 when Dad's co-worker got me to play on his office computer, hooked ever since :D
I'm a big wargamer and played many many of the old classic board and table top games(Car Wars, Axis & Allies, Diplomacy, Risk, Supremacy, Shogun, Warhammer(fantasy + 40K) and a billion others. Also a RPG'r as well (too many to list and don't know where to begin lol)
My first 'net game was Lords of the Realm 2 which was a ton of fun and first online community experience was joining an online squadron for USN Fighters '97 where I got to be the Sqd's basic BFM training officer after spanking my flight CO's butt on my check flight :cyclops:
DW's community is just what I look for in game, competative yet friendly, Glad i jumped in both feet first :D

Myself: I'm a junior bureaucrat for the Canadian government, located in Ottawa, with a thick Quebecois heritage that lets me tear it up with an absolutely ferociously thick Quebecois accent if I wish it, with a varied list of hobbies. I'm doing this while my girlfriend works her way through university, and then I'll get to finish up on my own degree.

My name here is a mixture of French and Nahuatl (a small hobby of mine at best), selected mostly to ensure an Internet-unique name.

As for this? Well, only a broken man didn't enjoy Car Wars, and would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't so ponderous. I was--no joke--preparing to code an online version of C.W., modified just enough to avoid legal issues. This game is fifty times better than what I imagined I was going to do (no AI, no 3D), so I'm pleased to help out on a greatly superior product however I can.

I thought your name had a certain Mayan/Incan/Aztec look to it. How do you pronounce it?
