Well, I do well enough in English. I'll try to keep my t'ick haxcent in check, hein?

The name? It's not meant to be pronounced at all, seriously. I just have people call it "AO". Or if you're JD, you can call me ACE. "Hey you!" is another valid pronounciation!

I'll be greatly, greatly amused if I actually know who you are. Ottawa is the weirdest city for that sort of thing.

OK........
I live about 200 miles East from Speedealer.
I was a Real Live Truck Driver!...(See! The Gearjammers story was partly true!)

I am a HUGE fan of Car Wars and Ogre...(Steve Jackson invented both)
Just found this game in February 2007!....

Next to Steven King......Sam Redfern is my HERO!

He has made a game I hoped would be produced a reality!

The membership here is 'stunning' in the scholastic and verbal attributes, as opposed to the "hurry up and play" norm of the "young" players.

Marathon was/is a favorite. Homeworld II is a good one too.

This Game RAWKS!

Heya, it's been a while since I last spoke up in this forum

I'm from Singapore. It seems I'm the only Asian/AZN guy here so far. Currently, I'm jobless. Like wolfeater, I'm waiting to be enlisted into the army. Compulsory 2 years enlistment in National Service argh. I'd enjoy it more if I wasn't being posted to a clerk/logistics vocation. Seriously, I really want to be an officer, and bring some pride to the family name. Besides, I'm getting more and more fond of physical (and mental) torture and want to push myself to the limits. It's just too bad that I may just have to settle for the slack-est vocation...

Hmm what else is there to talk about? Currently, busy settling my army and university stuff. Planning to take up social sciences, but since it' against my parents' will, I guess it's accountancy for me (that is if the faculty of accountancy will take me in). I can't wait for National Service to end (2 years of clerk = backaches + more pimples). University life may be more fun imho as I can take part in more co-curriculum activities. I'm just crazy over water sports, especially kayaking, canoeing, water skiing etc. Anything that has to do with adrenaline rush and thrill gets me high

I'm 18 btw. Grew up playing lots of old school games, but never really got into anything similar to DW. However, because I play a lot of old school games, I prefer them these days over modern games that seem to be rehashes of one another. I mean I never really saw the fun in having so many Need for Speeds or FPS that seem to be clones of each other in different settings. Darkwind's unique, and easy enough to pick up and play. That's good enough for me

Btw did I ever tell you guys why I'm so fond of Darkwind? It was about 5 months ago, when I was sitting for my GCE A levels. I had to mug through stacks of notes and books. Then, one day I got bored and searched for some online games to play with. Looking at the Determinance website, Ian (lead designer) was talking about Darkwind, so I checked out DW, and dled the client. I first went into the forums, looked at the community's behaviour, and was quite pleased with what I saw. Responses posted were mature

Ah but that's not the point. So I thought DW might be a great game, and booted it up. Joined my first race, hey it was pretty good, but needed some getting used to. Kept playing over and over again, but realised that I could only play like once every 1-2 hours because I could only take part in class Y and A races (non-deathraces). So I had an idea. I decided to study and play at the same time. In the end, I think I managed to absorb more knowledge than before I'd found DW. Somehow, DW was more of a help than a distraction. I could just play and read my notes at the same time. It was the first game that let you play and study together lol

Interesting read :-)

Ye, DW was always intended to be a game that you could do well at without committing 15 hours a day to playing.

How do you feel about accountancy BTW? Maybe it's your second choice anyway, but as a university lecturer myself I know what a mistaken approach it is for parents to push their children into doing degrees that they don't like.

TBH I'd rather take a Social Science subject over any other subject anytime of the day. But after thinking it through, we live in a practical world after all, or at least more so in Singapore. The rule here is that without money, you can't survive. That's how pragmatic it is, but it's reality, and I think that like it or not, I've got to accept it. The cost of living here is high, and besides I've got to contribute to the family's allowances/savings once I finish University

Hmmm I don't know, seriously I hate studying. I have a flair for numbers, but I don't like remembering theories and...well just because I'm good at something doesn't mean I have to like it. I prefer to do a job that I'm interested in. I would rather go to Sudan to do social work, or create my own business, than work for others and have to suffer the drag and monotony. I don't see the point in earning lots of money, and then not being able to spend it.

But what of the outcome if I choose the other route? Supporting my future wife, my kids, my family...all these require lots of expenses...I guess I don't have much of a choice here...

What do you think sam? Any personal experiences with such students too?

(uh I realised that we may actually derail the thread lol, so you can PM me too)

currently, i'm working as a carpenter for a friend of mine. i went to school for architecture and am looking to get back into that field. i'm spending my evenings working to spruce up the portfolio. in addition to that i've just started working on a comic book idea i've had bouncing around in my head for about 8 years. if i may, i might talk about it in another thread.

31 years old, been racing bicycles at an amateur level here in the united states (philadelphia to be specific) and a little bit in belgium last year.

i played a fair bit of car wars too and was semi-obsessed with the mad max movies when i was younger. got into the interstate 76 series as well. i saw someone post a message about this game on one of the car wars forums last year and got very, very exited. had a breakup in january and decided to start working on some of the dormant projects i've had lying around, effectively making me disappear from this game. i'm eating lucky charms right now with vanilla soymilk. other than that, i've been trying to eat food that have less than 10 ingredients listed on the label. (though, i had them for breakfast this morning and felt pretty damn good on the hill ride.)

'Redfern,' can i use that for my story??

I'm 22 years old. I'm studying for a Bachelor of Business Administration here in Vaasa, Finland where I live.

I started playing games when I was six years old and got a used Odyssey 2 from one of my mom's colleagues. I proceeded to own and play games on an Amiga 500 and a Sega mega drive (Genesis in USA). After that I got my first computer and have been playing PC games ever since. I'm a big fan of games such as Carmageddon and Interstate 76, which is why I downloaded Darkwind after hearing about it on Rpgcodex.

I'm also pretty passionate about indie game development and eliminating publishers. This is not the first indie game I've paid for, nor will it be the last. :)

I'm an old guy who stumbled upon the sight yesterday. Old enough, in fact, to have played the original Car Wars in the plastic box. I'm an unrepentant gamer, and couldn't be happier to have found Darkwind. Can't wait to subscribe (next paycheck... lol). The game looks awesome, and I can't wait to get more involved. Thanks for all the hard work.

I'm a 36 year old Alaskan, and I've been programming computers for 27 years (they started me on graphics algorithms when I was 9. heh).

By day, I do mostly web and corporate application programming. By night, I am co-owner of a small independent game company (though no releases yet... we're working on it).

I've also been a demoscener since 1986, and have been involved with many platforms (C-64, Amiga, and PC) and every role (coder, artist, musician) in the demoscene. My in-game name comes from my demoscene presence, where I have gone by the name "Deathangel's Shadow" for about 19 years (man, I'm getting old). My friends call me "deathy." The name of my gang is also the name of my demogroup, Epilogue... not that we've had many releases in a rather long time. We were most active on the Commodore 64, but we've had a few PC releases and even a GBA release (we had a second one put together, but lost the source code in a hard drive crash before it was finished).

Nothing game related... we don't believe in having anything available to the public until we're almost done because we're such a small outfit, we can't actually commit to a release schedule (at least until we don't have day jobs any more).

That said, you can listen to some of my music at last.fm and see some of my demogroup's releases at pouet.net (although you'll see that most of our current releases are .net exe packers with one GBA demo).  Some of our older work is still buried in some archives around the net, but are rather difficult to dig up.  Mostly old SID tunes and issues of the demomag we used to produce in the early 90s.

I think the most distressing thing about getting old is discovering how your body intends to fail you.  Mine is my digestive system (though I've also developed diabetes.  ugh).  Yup, gettin' old is a drag.

Unfortunately, the cost of attending all the way from Alaska is pretty unbelievably high (considering I'd have to bring my wife and daughter, we're talking about $8k for a cheap trip).  I'd really love to make it to some parties, though.  I used to joke around with the #coders crew in 95 that I was going to take a dog sled over the pole to get to Asm 95.  heheheheheheheh
