I gunned the trucks engine , and William , and Lee;
Each to their own vehicle departed as three;
“Good speed !” cried the guards, as the gate-bolts undrew;
“Speed!” echoed the wall to us rattling through;
Behind us the Gateway town lights sank to rest,
And into the evening we set off abreast.

Not a word to each other; we kept the great pace
Neck by neck through the gloom, never changing our place;
I turned to the Gatlings, adjusted the sights,
Whilst the scout up above me gazed into the night,
He scanned the horizon, alert for a sign
That our progress was watched by the forces malign

It was sunset at starting; but while we drew near
The old ruined highway the first sun appeared
As we passed the gas station on Telegraph Road
The sun was a furnace full set to explode
And amongst the gaunt buildings that once were a town
Lee broke silence, “my engine is down!”

His vehicle limping he fell off the pace
And left me and William to finish the chase
Through the mist in the sand bowls, with William beside,
Happy Idiot ran with no effort to hide
The thunder of engine and billowing sand
Marked out our progress across the dead land

And the landrunners flanks were now pitted and marked
No longer the elegant car that embarked;
But it seemed in the heat of the harsh midday sun
That the veteran car was enjoying this run
Each mile that passed like the last one the same
It seemed more determined the Vehicle became

We had just reached the farmland when William cried
“You will have to continue – my engine has died”
A great plume of smoke from his engine made clear
They had quite a long walk with great danger I fear
Rifles to hand, goggles for the suns rays
The three were consumed by the shimmering haze

So now just the veteran landy and I
Were left on the fields, not a cloud in the sky;
The broad sun above laugh’d a pitiless laugh,
’Neath our wheels broke the brittle bright stubble like chaff;
Till over a hill windmill sails sprang white,
"Praise heavens,” I gasped, “Somerset is in sight!

Then I loosend my facemask and foot to the floor,
Tore through the farmland to loud to ignore
As the gathering pirates made ready to pounce
I demanded of Idiot “just one more ounce
Of power – she gave it – went thundering through
the Somerset Gates with the clock striking two

And all I remember is, friends flocking round
As I sat with my head ’twixt my knees on the ground;
And no voice but was praising this vehicle of mine
As into my throat went the last cactus wine.
Happy Idiot went for a service and respray
befitting the car who brought good news from Gateway.

Really - apologies to Mr Browning - I imagine he would turn in his grave  ;)
