that's where fun virus started on PCs.  The virus writers will leave apple alone still until more and more are out there.

With OSX and windows getting more software bloat there will be a spot or two that the virus and malware writers will find that was left open, just bound to happen.

if you want to do damage, write a Linux virus. 75% of the webservers run linux. If you succefully write a linux virus the internet would become useless.
So why hasn't anyone done it?

Easy: it is hard to bypass security on linux, and even then, becouse of all the distro's it will only work on a certain distro...

I virus always exploits programming errors.
The solution is not writing a virus scanner (like microsoft) but patching the holes.

Until they learn that, you will always have crap installed on windows.

the lastest craze was the fake antivirus and antispyware programs. its still going on and they are raking in millions.

these were not security holes but tricking people into inviting the program into the machine and taking over.

I imagine it could affect any machine regardless of OS. I bet they just wrote it for windows because it was the easiest and would net the most money.

Hey Mike - one last dig and I'll leave it alone - very tongue in cheek here...

They wrote it for Windows because Mac users know they don't have viruses anyway, so they'd never fall for such a transparent scam. :)

ahhhh apple announced that it encourages people to run antivirus on their macs "to make it just one more step" that the malware writers have to circumvent. If a pop up came up like antivirus 2009 saying you need antivirus and masked itself as an "apple" product, I am sure someone will fall for it. Just not enough apple users now to make it worth it.

final note, are apple computers virus free? YES

will apple always be virus free? NO

will windows ever be virus free? NO WAY

I believe the last link to whether a computer will always be virus free is the user. No matter how hard anyone tries to make an OS that can completely keep the machine clean will always have a weak link, the user.

I run antivirus programs on my Macs, just to be sure Windows users I'm writing to won't get infected with a Windows dedicated virus that could pass through my mailbox. :)

I've always been using Windows, and I'm a very heavy power user. I've only had ONE virus, that was on Windows 98 when I was 12 years old, only had to learn that lesson once.
