Trying the beta of Windows 7 from microsoft.

Microsoft has driver updates that will download new drivers to your system after install. I had an old creative soundblaster live in the computer and the windows update found the driver for it. The audio sounded awful. I suspect this old 9 year old sound card wont work (obviously creative doesnt even have vista drivers on their site) so the sound card will have to be replaced.

Downloaded the full install of darkwind. trying to start and all I got was music no video.

The imbedded nvidia driver included in the install of Windows 7 doesnt work with darkwind. nvidia auto detect for your driver says it is the latest driver and no update necessary.

noticed in console log that the video card was not being detected.

Downloaded new driver from nvidia that said while loading it was the windows 7 display driver.

darkwind works fine.

will post update when I go and get a new soundcard.

Yeah - tried on a netbook ( with all devices embedded) and did not even get this far.
But I have great hope for Win7 compared to Vista.

I suspect that the video driver was written to use directx 10 and the video card I have is a 6600GT from 2002 and will not obviously take directx 10. It'll work but I think I'll get the same results until I get a video card that can handle directx 10.

Windows 7 will only work if out of the box it has no problems. Microsoft's rush to get it out might make that a bit difficult.

I wonder if the beta is not dealing with Nvidia any better than Vista is. Nvidia is supposed to be Vista certified (and their flagship video cards) but there are all kinds of problems with drivers crashing. I recently read that Nvidia cards met the minimum performance marks for Vista so that was enough for Microsoft and Nvidia to certify their cards as Microsoft approved. Once again, Microsoft markets better than it performs.

Nvidia continues to work on improving their drivers for Vista but I know they have not fixed the issues yet. I updated the drivers for my 8500GT two days ago and have had two driver crashes since then.

Read some articles on Microsoft's campaign to defeat openGL and openGL's failure to keep the code updated to handle the faster video cards.

The article talked about openGL not releasing updates as fast as promised and Microsoft pushing DirectX to replace openGL.

I think Microsoft is making a move with Windows 7 to put the nail in openGL's coffin.

I got the latest windows 7 build 7057, and it loaded in and installed just fine. It picked up all the devices I have in the machine. This included an ATI 3300 HD integrated video.

When I tried to load darkwind, the video dropped out. The same thing happened when I loaded a machine that had an nvidia graphic GPU. I updated the driver replacing the microsoft supplied driver with an nvidia driver and no problem.

Same thing happened with the ATI board. The microsoft supplied driver would not run darkwind but the ATI driver is. I had to actually use the ATI driver for vista.

This also points in the direction of Windows 7 being nothing but Vista Part II. ZDnet has tested XP vs. Vista vs. Windows 7 and even the beta windows 7 build 7057 ran faster than all.

So to all that want to load windows 7 and run darkwind you will need to get the video driver from ATI or Nvidia because the Microsoft driver won't work. I'm not a programmer so I cannot say for sure it's because microsoft didnt put in openGL compatibility in the microsoft video driver but it looks like it.

When putting hope in MS is the last way out were already doomed!

Actually that was the same argumentation they had when they worked on Vista - we all know how this ended, right? Besides that it seems they used it to hide that they based DX10 on openGL again after they failed without openGL, right?

You know why I love Wine? Its an awesome emulation for an OS-simulation! ;)

Not a fan of microsoft at all. I'd like to see an operatuing system that is SIMPLE and just does the absolute basics. ACcess to programs and the ability to save on the harddrive.

None of this built in crap that most never use. When I saw windows 3.11 I just went back to DOS commands because I didnt need what windows 3.11 offered.

I would love to see a stripped down windows that is modulated to where you only installed the modules that you need.

if it could run windows programs, I'd love it!

ubuntu can run off the CD, put it on a fast flash drive and you would have a FAST machine.

You can load windows on a flash drive as well, havent tried it yet.

Windows & has build 7068 Now, works nicely.

Well FWIW I installed the Vista RC1 on my laptop and can't get DW to launch. Pretty sure it's graphics issue ...

Loading compiled script darkwind/client/scripts/clientSandbox.cs.
Loading compiled script darkwind/client/scripts/clientCharacterCreation.cs.
Loading compiled script darkwind/client/scripts/default.bind.cs.
Binding server port to default IP
UDP initialized on port 0
This shouldn't happen: glGenTextures
This shouldn't happen: glBindTexture
This shouldn't happen: glTexImage2D
This shouldn't happen: glTexParameteri
This shouldn't happen: glTexParameteri
This shouldn't happen: glTexParameteri

Obviously there are no updated drivers for my graphics card ... it's Intel integrated ... not even Vista drivers. ;)

Not a big deal but I'll probably play around with it a little more.

WUBI UBUNTU is even faster than the above 2 ways.
It is a win 32 install and can be uninstall ed same way.
No partionining works on FAT 32 and NTFS
Creates a single very big loop-back-file ( 2-4gigs) and modified the standard MS bootloader that exist on all Xp/Vista/7 machines.

It does require a reboot and foryou to chooseubuntu in the boot loader screen.

Portable Unbuntu
is quicker to access but sits 'on-top'of windows ( using Cygwin app layer ?)

For older machines using WINE Wubi would be an easy non- intrusive experiment , requiring just disk space and a coupleof reboots
