I can contest to the longevity of Apple computers. My main computer is an old dual 1.25 Ghz G4 that I purchased nearly seven years ago. It still runs like the day I opened the package and performs all of its jobs (including gaming) admirably. I'll admit that I wish it was a bit faster with gaming graphics now as games which require better hardware come out, but I've not yet seriously considered replacing the old thing.

In those seven years of very hard use (It's moved four times, including 1500 miles once, and was used by me in college) I've had no software problems and only one hardware problem in a part which was used only briefly by Apple because of discovered issues.

Oh. And if you want real longevity. My parent's first Mac SE (basically one step up from the Lisa and from about 1988) still works. They don't use it for any real work anymore, but it was one of the eight or so computers which they used in their business all the way into the 21st century.

As some of you know, I work in IT at a school district. We are 99% Apple (except for food service & some business machines). We still have MANY operational G3's that are finally being phased out this year. THey just refuse to die!

No, not every Apple that comes off the line will last 13 years I'm sure, but we have about 60 that are still in use. Then the tray load iMac & early slot loads... We have about 150 combined. Graphite iMacs are our current "floor" as far as support and repair, but there's nothing wrong with them. :)

I was DOS/Windows for about 13 years before moving to Apple and I have NO intention of ever moving back. :)

Can you play Left 4 Dead or any of the Total War games on a Mac? (Barring reloading XP on Mac hardware of course) :p

Well hard drive came in yesterday and reloaded with Vista. I refuse to use it as an office OS but as a gaming OS it's fine. It's still bloated but I've heard good buzz about Windows 7 fixing a lot of the bloating problems. If only my stomach doctor could do the same...

Anyway, reloaded L4D first thing and waiting for the new downloadable content to come in today (hopefully). :) Might be enough to split my time from Dark Wind... for a couple of days at least. :D

I don't know what I can play on a Mac, but I'm not really interested because I play most games (except for DW) on a PS3. My TV screen is much bigger and of a higher definition than my computer monitor (which is an Apple product and older than my computer ;) ) And the audio that I have attached to the television is significantly better, as well.

But you bring up a good point: If for some odd reason I wanted/needed to, I could run Windows on a Mac.

MAC is solid, thats all there is to it. The older macs are solid, still running as jimmy noted...

story I heard was apple did start allowing 3rd parties to make parts after jobs left the first time. that proved to be just like PC 3rd party manufacturers. got in some trouble so jobs was hired back. jobs took apple back to if we dont make it, it dont go into our machines and that is why MAC has been reliable machines since. They sued that company that makes mac clones and lost. so now companies will make mac clones and people will think that reflects on apple when it really doesnt. We'll see the cheap knock offs coming and a company will emerge that makes cheap crap like DELL.

I forsee apple going the way of PC. make em cheap to compete. Apple will always have a strong OS but I'm afraid as they gain marketshare the virus and malware writers will start to include MACS. its already done with pirated apple software.

if apple didnt have the iphone and ipod they would not have nearly the marketshare they have today.

I still wouldnt go MAC the same reason corps dont want vista. software compatibility. I can find 10 times more software for a PC, that would be the ONLY reason.

I can build machines that last for a long time as long as I use good parts. Cant build laptops however so that will change. Can build a portable computer but nothing that gets around like a notebook.

I see microsoft in trouble and losing marketshare to MAC and LINUX. goes to show that if you make a marginal product and try to stuff it down everyone's throats youll end up in trouble in the end.

as far as windows 7 it is better than xp and vista, I just dont see it widely accepted by the office world when they can dump the licensing fees and go linux or go mac for the reliability.

I see more linux due to it being able to be loaded on any PC.

I did a project in school way back when solaris first came out for PC. loaded it on a pentium 100 MHZ, (MHZ NOT GHZ) machine and it booted in 10 seconds... linux based.. just awesome

:) No idea. There are many games that are cross platform (Darkwind, for one ;) ) but I don't play those games so I don't know.

As for the windows thing, I don't "reload" but instead use Parallels for Windows stuff. Works fine for me.

Mike - just for the sake of discussion, what software? I used to think that there was more for the PC, but I've found that there's a lot of duplication, plus I've found a TON of productivity things for the Mac.

As for the virus and malware thing... I have to agree to disagree with people. I don't think it's a marketshare thing. UNIX is just too tight for self-replicating things like that.

I don't. They could've done that years ago and probably would've gained market share if they wanted to but haven't. You were right about the Mac clones. These "SuperMacs" were crap and didn't last much over a year, if that. As far as other companies building computers which can run Mac OS: it's absolutely possible, I don't know what the current state of things are. But, in my book, if it doesn't say Mac on it, have the apple logo, etc, it ain't a Mac. Simple enough.

Agreed, jimmy. There may be quite a bit more software out for PCs, but how much of it do you really want that's not available for the Mac as well? I don't know anyone who needs 12 different word processors. . . and my parents are publishers.

When I want to do something a little bit different I'll find tons more little software items for PC than MAC but I can agree that is changing.

also, the way of hardware I can see MAC doesnt have as much as PC (not as much junk either) so when I made our main PC a media center PC I dont think I would have been able to do that with a MAC unless I wanted to spend $$$$$

Windows Media Center still rocks, even with its little flaws. We turned a PC into a DVR with a $100 TV Tuner Card/ It displays to a TV by svideo and vista sees it as a second monitor. The media center plays TV on the TV and you can still use the PC for other things.

anyway, that is not run of the mill use for a computer. I'd say I dont see any real difference between PC and MAC besides the OS.

we can say the OEMs have made PCs junk. Make your own and you havew the reliability.

One BIG thing I can say for MAC is with the nvidia video chip defect MAC owned up to it and if you have any issue they will replace it without question. Right now I am fighting with HP to replace this notebooks motherboartd due to the defective nvidia chip. when left on, the nvidia chip overheats and the video fails. HP refuses to replace it and tells me that the notebook is too old and its due to age. They tell me a notebook will only last 2 to 3 years. Ridiculous!

so to close I'd say notebook wise, apple rocks except for price. as far as desktop I would still stick with PC.

I bought my 1ghz g4 powerbook dec 2002, worked like a champ till last november with my ATI card showing signs of impending doom & demise, hoping to hold out for the next gen of Nephlahem notebooks in October.... arg! , but 7 Years! hope Apple still makes good laptops today.

edit: Have a suspicion Apple's 10.5.6 broke something but maybe a coincidence
