It has been a bad few days. Lying in a makeshift cot attached to a drip Patricia Cotton is feeling the effects of too long in the wilderness.

Cantankerous and Revisionist are now in the hands of the Arachnids. Ramos had already sent the replacements but she will miss the familiar vehicles.

In the next bunk Paul 'Joseph' Waddington stirs. He opens his eyes to slits, looking out from a cracked and blistered face at Patricia.

"I'm sorry Trish... I'm really sorry"

"You are one of the best scouts I know paul. We all know how easy it is to be jumped in the Scatterd Hills."

"yeah but thre were so many of them... I dont know how I missed them... and they got so close"

"look Paul..." patricia says carefully "we know you had a bad day at the office but you learn from mistakes. With four to one odds we never stood a chance. And nobody died. If you hadnt spotted those scorpions on the way back it could have been much worse. Thirteen of the buggers! I've never seen then in a group that big!"

"Yeah" says Paul "Josh is gonna get it in the neck from Ramos. Going out with an empty rifle! he will be lucky if Ramos doesn't wring his scrawny neck"

Paul closes his eyes. he lies back under the slowly circling ceiling fan, the breeze cooling and easing the pain of blistered skin.

"Scorpions...." he mutters "I hate goddam scorpions"

"just not sure if I hate the cars or the bugs more!"
