I've been experiencing strange periods of time where my CPU usage skyrockets while playing DW and everything slows to a crawl (including mouse movement.)

These seem to last 1-2 minutes before everything goes back to normal. I haven't noticed any background processes popping up that would cause this and it hasn't been happening with other programs.

The computer drags really really heavily, even in the finder things are incredibly slow.

Anyone else having this problem?

I see somewhat of a slow down occasionally, but not as extreme as what you're describing. When it happens here I look up and Time Machine *AND* Mobile Me are both syncing at the same time.

I've noticed that recent versions of iTunes suck up CPU cycles with abandon, especially if the Genius functionality (I use the term guardedly) is turned on.

I've been playing with no other programs open, unfortunately - except for "activity monitor" which has confirmed the draggy.

This may be a sign of some deep problem with my lappy toppy, though. Dark Wind may just be the canary.

It looks like the symptomes of mdworker, a process of spotlight, turns on when there is a lot of new data on your hard drive, and can suck 40% of your cpu.... the effect is particularly bad when you have little ram

but would be strange if it's caused by dw

DW constantly uses massive amounts of CPU time, to the point of overheating my laptop, when it's running, for me. When I do a stack trace it is flipping buffers for all it's worth, even though nothing is changing.

So what surprises me isn't that this happens sometimes for you guys, but that it doesn't happen all the time for you guys.

DW actually managed to kill my old computer, I can't imagine playing it on a laptop... I'd burn my lap!

Like most games, the DW client actually runs at full tilt, using up as much CPU as it can get in order to achieve the best possible framerate. This should be a constant though, not something that ebbs and flows. And in a modern operating system it shouldn't screw over other applications too badly, since the OS should make sure they get a look-in too. (Plus many of us are on dual-core+ these days, so DW will only monopolise one of the cores).

Well, I'm treating DW's newfound problem on this computer as a problem with the laptop and not the game - sometime in the next few months I'll have a newer, more powerful lappy. If it's still a problem, I'll let ya'll know.
