What is it with recruiting in Somerset, anyway?

I recruit a driver, I get a guy whose best skill is Heavy Guns.

I recruit a gunner, I get a guy whose best skill is as a mechanic.

I recruit a mechanic, I get a guy whose best skill is Driving.

Seems like whatever I ask for, I (so far) have been getting something else instead. :( What gives?

You must teach liars a lesson. It is the only way. There is a lovely volcano on the Firelight road....

Until you have a higher fame, recruits will lie. If you noticed, when recruiting a character, the text says "These characters CLAIM to have the skills you are looking for"

Just because they don't have the skill you are looking for doesn't make them useless. Train them in what you are wanting them to do or use them in scary deathraces or arena events. They will train or die.

And remember to try and save for your free gang member rather than paying to max out your squad, its a mistake that you may regret later on in gameplay.

The wiki says, "A high Fame only improves your likelihood of getting an honest character when you are recruiting your 'free' character. Paying to recruit characters negates your Fame advantage (and your Recruiter specialism if you have it). "

Does that phrase "Paying...negates your Fame advantage" mean that by paying, you are more likely to get lied to?

A'...yes, it does.

I've had maxed fame...recruiters...etc., waited for my free guy...picked gunner...got a trucker. Three times.

So, even though the Wiki says it's supposed to be 'less likely,' don't you believe it. They're going to lie no matter what.

Best to just take them into a scout...kick them out with a pistol and let them get shot down or run over; at least you'll get some sort of enjoyment out of it.

I stopped looking for a particular skill long ago. Now I go for "best available."

And remember, everyone can drive - everyone can shoot. The higher the skill the *better* they do it, but all post-apoc people can do these things, and they can all learn.

Need a lgunner but got a gunner? Use him anyway. Let him learn L Gunner the hard way while "training" for Gunner. You'll wind up with a sniper that can reload fast. :)

Got a trucker while looking for a scout? Take him and put him in a fast car and run small missions with him. The mission fee will help defray the cost of the gates fee while he learns how to scout AND your gang gets positive rep and fame.

What jimmylogan said. And this: instead of chasing those elusive skill values, be prepared to recruit many characters. Fire those who lack not the skills required, but who lack high strength, dexterity and speed. Preferably courage and leadership as well, but as strength, dexterity and speed are the only values that never go up, they are the values that need to be high from the outset.

That said, I can't say I've noticed dex and strength affecting characters combat abilities much (though perhaps that will change, now that melee combat is in). But high speed scores can sometimes make tons of difference.

These days, I accept whatever characters I get, as long as the abilities are high enough, put them in a cheap car setup, and train them through solo wilderness runs. They reach the higher amateur levels (30-50) within days.
