Clash of Heroes

A not-so-short entry by Damon_Angel

Aaron Wells stood just inside the gaping doors that let light into the massive vehicle repair bay that was Somerset`s main autoduel arena. The place was abuzz with activity. Another Friday night of racing, death and mayhem was about to unfold, and this time, he was going to be a part of it.

Just turned 17, Aaron had wanted to race ever since he could remember. His father had taken him to his first professional race at the age of 5, and he`d been hooked ever since. The day he turned 16, against his mother and father`s wishes, he`d walked away from their farm and into the local dirt-track, volunteering for the Friday night Amateur race.

He`d been strapped into a Chevalier by a grizzled old man who passed for a pit crew in the cess-pool of a track. But he knew every great racer had to have roots. Had to have a place where they took their first win; and that without starting at po-dunk tracks like this one, your chances of `getting a ride` were slim to none. You didn`t just walk into the main-event tracks in central Somerset and demand to be taken seriously.

No, you had to sacrifice your sweat and blood on the outskirts of the real action; make a name for yourself running in smaller venues, get noticed.

Well, he`d gotten noticed alright. Halfway through his first lap, when he`d thought to himself how great everything was going as he moved around another competitor and found himself staring at the rear-end of the leader, he`d been introduced to a long-standing fact about going around in circles at high speed trying to be Number One: rubbing is racing.

Hell, slamming into things is racing. Tapping the inside corner of the rookie`s ride that just slid by you into second place just hard enough to turn his picturesque slide into an uncontrollable spin that ended up putting him into a retaining wall that didn`t retain very well...was racing.

Aaron still, to this day, doesn`t remember what happened. But he was told his wreck was pretty spectacular. `End over end,` was the phrase they`d used. Six times! They`d told him, when he`d woken up in the hospital two days later. `On fire!` another had said. `It was cool.` the good-looking brunette standing at the end of his bed had said. And that was when he found out another thing about racing.

Girls loved racers. That had sealed the deal for him. As soon as he`d gotten out of the hospital and was given a clean bill of health, he`d jumped back into another race car. Hell, he`d even gotten `air time` from the announcer, who informed the spectators about his spinning, firey, somewhat premature end to his first outing.

`Great,` he`d thought. `I hope they don`t expect me to do that again.`

But he hadn`t. He`d paid attention to the other drivers and how they negotiated around the track and had finished in the top five out of a field of 20. And the brunette had been waiting for him in the pits.

Now, a year later, he was going to be `in the show.` He`d gotten noticed out there, on the periphery of the real racing, going around in circles on badly-maintained local tracks. It started with a few consistent top five finishes, then grew into regular top three with the occassional win; and moved into consistent top place finishings. That`s when the money had noticed and he`d picked up his first sponsor.

That`s when he learned another rule about racing: money is racing. Without cash, you`d spend your entire life going in circles for the locals, on decrepit dirt tracks using last week`s surviving vehicles.

Now, he had a brand new Phoenix with 375 horses under the hood. His name over the driver`s side door. `Mongo`s Biotics` emblazoned on the hood. Not the most prestigious of sponsors, but a sponsor none the less.

`Wells!` he heard someone yell over the clanging and banging of the pits. `Over here!`

He looked and saw his crew chief waving at him. With every bit of bad-ass he could muster, he tried his best to put a swagger into his step and started walking towards his team`s pit. He`d actually looked good for about two seconds and then he saw some commotion off to his left. Looking, he`d stopped dead in his tracks and, mouth agape, found himself standing next to one of his heroes.

A cameraman and reporter were talking to one of the most controversial racers in Evan and his personal hero; `Sir` Michael Williams, from the Latte`s Raiders stable. 21, with boyish good looks, a stack of League-leading trophies and several Championships under his belt, Williams lived fast on and off the track.

Aaron had posters of Williams on his room`s walls. He`d actually met him once at a fan-event. Sir Williams had signed one of his posters. Wells fell asleep every night looking up at that poster, which showed Williams passing the finish line at the Evan Race League finals, the year of his first Championship win.

Cocky and overconfident to the extreme, Williams had been known to pull off stunts like busting around the pace car before a race started, then fly around the track to position himself at the back of the pack instead of on the pole where`d he started; all the while yelling a string of obscenities at his competitors before, at the drop of the green flag...threading his way through them to resume the lead and go on to place third despite having lost all his tires in the Pro event!

Loved by his fans...hated by many of his competitors for his on- and off-track escapades, including several stints in Elmsfield`s Rehab` facilities for various addictions and romantic entanglements with several well-known single...and not so single women around Evan, made Williams a legend and Aaron`s favorite driver.

He stopped and despite another yell from his pit boss, listened to his hero as he was interviewed.

`...competition? Competition? Do you not read the weeklies? There isn`t a racer in Evan that can catch me, let alone kill me, luv!` he said, then laughed out loud while grabbing around the waist a gorgeous blonde that had been standing off to one side, pulling her in close to plant a long kiss on her lips; camera rolling the entire time.

Looking into the camera after the kiss he`d said `Now, see that? There`s competition! That`s the only thing I have to worry about finishing last in!

`Never finish before the lady! Coming in first in THAT race won`t get you any trophies!`

Aaron had laughed, hearing that. Big mistake.

`Do I amuse you?` Williams had said, turning in his direction and fixing Aaron with those intense blue eyes. `Do I make you laugh?`

Shocked, Aaron had taken a step back. `Uh...` was all he`d managed.

`And who the f_ck are you, anyways? Fancy yourself a racer then?` Williams fired at him. `Standing there in your nice new shiny leathers...laughing at me? Do you have any idea who it is you`re having a go at?`

`I...` was his second great retort.

`Piss off then and mind your own business! The adults are talking here sonny!`

Aaron didn`t have time to say anything...strong hands grabbed him and dragged him off. Firmly in the grasp of his pit boss now, all he could think of was how much of an idiot he`d just looked to, of all people, his personal hero.

`What the hell were you thinking?` the chiding continued once they`d gotten to his team`s stall. `Your first professional race and you`ve just managed to piss off one of the most dangerous people on the planet! Great start!`

Aaron dropped onto a bench, setting his helmet down next to his leg.

`Alright, look kid...you`d do best to not make any friends OR enemies your first day out, okay?

`Right now, all I`m worried about is keeping you, and, more importantly, this car alive and well long enough to make it at least a lap around the track. Having all these pretty pictures on her doesn`t do our sponsors any good if the car doesn`t make it onto the track because the driver got his ass kicked in the pits!`

`Okay, already, I got it...gimme a break!` Aaron said. `I couldn`t help it....`

`Couldn`t help it?` his pit boss shot back. `You don`t have that luxury now, kid! Everything you do now matters...how you conduct yourself on and off the track is going to make or break your career. You have to have as much control off the track as on it! You think Williams over there hasn`t orchestrated his entire reputation? You think ANYTHING he does is by chance? I guarantee you, every trip to rehab`, every new hottie you see him with, someone planned! Nothing is left to chance kid! You need to get your head out of your ass and realize that!`

Wells felt like he was back on the family farm getting chewed out for tipping over a tractor trying to `drift` through the fields. He was glad his father wasn`t here.

`Look, kid...forget about it.` the boss said. `Hand me those check lists and let`s go over the car`s systems one more time. We don`t have a lot of leeway before you need to be out there.`

The next half hour was spent going over the Phoenix`s operating systems. Then Aaron was being strapped into the driver`s seat and along with the other 19 competitors, engines roared to life, officials started waving teams out of their pits and onto the track.

Aaron was in the number 5 slot. Three rows back off the pole. He`d had a good qualifying run, but not good enough. Still, he smiled when he saw his picture and name flash up on the big screen over the arena announcing his starting position. He`d noticed William`s had, again, secured the number one spot.

The pace car pulled onto the track and led the 20 into the starting lap. It still felt weird to Aaron to be racing on asphalt. He`d been brought up on dirt. Learning to race on the hard, slick surfaces in the `big times` had taken hours of solo driving; hundred of tires burned up or ripped to shreds while he tried to `get a handle` on how different hard-track racing was to dirt-tracking. But he`d caught on. Racing was in his blood. He always thought he and his vehicle reached a strange symbiosis by spending time going around in circles at high speed. Each learned the others` strengths and weaknesses and tried to adapt.

His pit boss had been right. Everything required the utmost control, especially at the speeds things happened, now, where money moved everything. He`d been a wet-behind-the-ears rookie before, now it was time for him to become a professional. His brain was lagging behind his body`s new situation. In an instant, both caught up to the other.

And then the pace car was dropping off and Aaron saw the flagman bring his arm down, the green flag trailing in the wind and the roar of 20 racing engines filled the air with a banshees wail and he discovered that he was one of the banshees.

He clutched, revved the engine and dropped a gear, the RPM`s matching perfectly as he floored the accelerator, juking the steering wheel left as he did, then quickly back to the right. The nose of his black and red Pho` slipped alongside the number 34 car that sat 4th in the pole, just ahead of him. He eased on the gas...nosed up another foot...and caught the 34 car just as it started a move to the inside.

Aaron snapped his wheel right, edging the tail of the 34 car off-line just enough to start it sliding, then he backed off the gas, spun the wheel to the right and slid into the gap left when the 34 car corrected the slide and moved down on the track, rearend fishtailing. Back on the fuel, the Pho` leapt forward. 10 seconds into the race and Aaron was up a spot, in fourth now. The smell of burnt fuel filled his nostrils. He looked left...the driver of the 34 car flipped him off. He grinned like a maniac and slid his car down the track, pinning the finger-flicker against the wall.

Sparks flew as the left side of his opponent`s car ground its new paint job off on the rough concrete inner wall. Aaron gave him one more shove, then eased to the right, letting his car climb back up the track, just as the inside left front tire of the 34 car caught traction and the nose of the car rose skyward! It flipped into the space Aaron had just vacated and started sliding upside down across the track.

The cars behind it tore across the asphalt trying to avoid the sliding wreck. Not everyone made it. Another two racers got caught up in the mess. Aaron saw flames in the rearview. He grinned wider.

Up ahead, he saw the emblazoned markings of Williams` car, in a hot duel for the lead with the 2 qualifier. It was the first lap, so there were no big theatrics yet. All the racers were rubbing each other to test out how far each would go when the race got into the mid and final laps, when being super aggressive was the norm.

Then his attention was slammed back into the car as he felt a nudge from behind. There were only three other cars anywhere near close to him. The commotion hed caused at the start of the race had slowed the field. He could see the rest of the pack about 100 yards behind him, coming fast.

Aaron thought about giving the brakes a quick tap to try and bend the front end of the car behind him but didnt have the track; they were coming into the first turn at 100! He tapped the clutch, punched it to the rev-limiter and popped the tranny. The Phos horsepower and torque answered. The rear tires broke loose, Wells floored it and flikked the wheel left and then quickly back to the right as the rear of the Phoenix kicked out in that direction. With the accelerator to the floor, smoke rolled off his tires, blinding the idiot behind him. With a quick lift on the gas, the Pho grabbed traction again and shot off straight at the turns apex.

He risked a quick look behind him and saw his adversary drifting up towards the wall as he blazed through the cloud of tire smoke. The two jackals that had been chasing them tore around the slowing race car and came on hard.

New Gang in Town: Part 3

A continuation submitted by JS

Today was going to be a good day. Knox just knew it would. He literally floated-sauntered down the muddy street. The little rain Somerset got tended to turn the streets to sticky mud. The dunes were kept at bay by the town walls, piling up against them driven by the incessant wind, but in town there was less sand, consequently the underlying clay made a proper mess when wet. Fortunately, or not if you were thirsty, it rained little. He noticed his white shoes were taking some splash damage from the stroll but he shrugged it off. He was in a cheery enough mood that it didn`t bother him. Well, truth be told it bothered him a bit but he could clean them obsessively when he got home. Home was where he was headed in a round about way. Knox never went straight anywhere, too many things caught his attention and he nearly always indulged the impulse to investigate anything that peaked his interest. So he kicked muddier than usual dirt clods, and moved in his lanky saunter, criss-crossing the street while looking around. It was an interesting day, a Monday, which was traditionally a day for the multitudinous gangers to rest and repair. There were lots of people out and about, the vast majority of which were unsavory, violent and eccentric which inevitably made for some kind of entertainment. A shootout, and challenge to race, a knife fight, you name it. Two guys were rolling some well worn tires down the road toward the market. Knox sniffed with disdain, those weren`t fit for tire swings. Another crowd was moving a bunch of jerry cans of fuel, using a donkey and a cart; it being more expensive to expend gas to move gas at times. Knox understood in the old world that had not been the case. Sadly this was not the old world anymore. He often wondered if he would have been more comfortable there. Probably, and big Sis belonged here, he was a fish out of water, or out of time he supposed.
He followed the tire rollers to the market and made a quick drive by of the engine part shops. He was always looking for the missing pieces he needed to complete his nitro system for his car `The Rooster`. Knox was a bit conflicted as to whether he should love or hate the name. Dory had named it that because she thought she was funny calling his walk a rooster strut. She wasn`t funny of course, in fact Dory thinking she was funny was actually the humorous part. But he sort of liked the name even if the reason was a mild irritant.
There was little of note at the shops, precious few new things at all in fact which was a bit unusual. The family had been talking about salvage being poor lately, which appeared to be true, `It comes in cycles` Dory had said. He had no idea what that meant, why in the hell would that come in cycles? Just another non sense saying from the old world he supposed. He did find some interesting weapon mount parts for another project he was fiddling with and bought them, actually he traded a couple extra tools he was carrying around for them. The shop owner, more of a hut than a shop, smiled as he went and said `Nice Belt`. And probably something else insulting although he mumbled the last. Knox didn`t turn but put his hand up making the universal symbol for go screw yourself.
`Thanks Man, I love the feathers too`.
Knox was wearing his finest from last nights shenanigans. Little what`s her name had been a lot of fun, in fact more fun than he had in a long time. That was until he found out she bore the same name as his sister, spelled slightly different but it sounded the same spoken nonetheless. Creepy actually. He had not managed to get her name until the morning, it being a night of `Yeah`, and `What`s that Baby`? and `OK Darlin`. He spent the early part of the date in an infuriating attempt to get her name, no one they met said it! He noted that lots of people called her `Baby`. Knox got so far into the night that he dared not ask it, but in the end it didn`t matter. He spent the night at her place. Which was all well and good until the morning, when she let drop the real reason she asked him to stay the night. What`s her name wanted to ask if she could join the family of all things! She claimed to be a great driver. They all said that, even the horrible ones, especially the horrible ones. That was a tad disappointing, but seeing as he was being used he decided to ask her name, shake her hand and tell her to come see his big sis later because Dory did all the hiring. Strangest interview, and end to a date, he had ever been a part of that was for sure.
Closer to home he heard the usual shop sounds of the various gangs fixing and refitting vehicles. Metallic clicks and clanks, occasional curses, directions shouted form a particularly fat mechanic as a 3.2L V8 engine was carefully wedged into small car. That one is going to stick out a bit Knox mused, he figured it must be a racer and not a combat rig. Guy must be rich, not a lot of fat people around here with food so scarce. He`d need to be rich to own a V8 of any kind. What caught his attention though was the sound of a couple impact wrenches, the distinctive whine and thump of which was singularly unique. The sound was coming from Jake`s place. What Knox wouldn`t do to have one of those things. His Pop had one back south, but it was broken, and in any event it was lost to the thugs who had killed his first family, and his dad. He sure could use one though, they made quick work of things, and while you could rent the ones at Jakes for fast repairs, it was expensive. If Knox could get one of those puppies he figured he could work much faster. Then maybe Dory would get off his case when she wanted things done fast, cause they would be done fast. How many times could one woman ask when a car would be done in one day anyway? Somewhere around a thousand he figured. He liked tools, especially powered ones, and such, too bad he couldn`t afford to buy one. Not that Jake would sell one of the precious things. Knox thought about it as he walked, he was always looking for an angle. Perhaps one could be `liberated`? No big deal, sneak in, lift it, lie low for a while and then have one of the guys sneak it out and then bring it back in as salvage. What could go wrong? Plenty of course. He sighed at his own bad idea, it was a good plan except for the fact that the place was tightly wound up with security and goons everywhere. There were enough giant meatheads in there to pull him apart with their own hands. He didn`t know Jake other than by reputation, but he knew enough to know it would not go well were he caught. Still, it was something to file away for later potentially. One of those wrenches sure would be nice, and you can`t be pulled apart for thinking. Well, unless one of those Psi muties was around. It was then that he noticed he had been quite unknowingly angling across the street toward Jakes, as if some giant magnetic impact wrench was drawing him over there, and he was staring at the joint practically casing it in broad daylight. He quickly moved on, in this paranoid and violent world that crap was noticed and noted. He quickly moved on toward home.
Getting closer to their hovel, as Knox liked to call it much to Dory`s displeasure, he tidied up his appearance. A quick lick and he slicked back his hair a bit with the left over gel from last night and adjusted his shirt as well as the feather belt to which the shop keeper had given a back handed compliment. Recently, the medic Martha Chamlee had told him it was a `Boa`, from the old world and was meant to be worn by women around their neck. Knox thought that a horrible waste of potential and liked it as a belt. To be honest it was in reality a conglomeration of a feather boa and some `Stoles` as Chamlee called them. The medic claimed to have seen them in one of those old time movies some people wasted their time on. Knox didn`t care, about the movies, or the supposed original purpose of he belt, or about dowdy women named Martha for that matter. She was such a kill joy anyhow. It was stylish and dashing, as far as he was concerned anyway, and people could just sod off if they didn`t like it. Come to think of it, he sure did have to give the finger to a lot of people over his belt.
Turning the last corner Knox was immediately pissed, his it`s gonna be a good day mood tarnished a bit by the sight in front of him. The `Retort` was sitting out front, shot to hell, and probably about half way back again. Standard return procedure in the family was to park it in the garage area, well garage-ish, tent like shanty hovel. The salvage stayed outside being usually trashed, unless it was valuable, like the Apache they had captured a few days back. That was going to be a killer when he got it patched up, provided some good weapons could be found, sadly that was the real trick around here it appeared. It was strange, good weapons being well more plentiful down south than here. Knox mentally snapped back to the questions at hand. Either someone was screwing up and being lazy, or something was going down. He doubted Big Sis would let screw-up or lazy go on for long without a good reason and he meant to find out what it was. He picked up the pace and glanced in the `Retort` against his better judgment and gagged a bit, yep, blood and goo. Great, that was their first sedan and a grand old lady. The guys hated the sedans, almost as much as they hated the ratty tatty Chomper he called `Insult`. He loved that little inside joke. Approaching the door, had he known what was going to happen, he may have just spun a one eighty on his heel and sauntered on away. Maybe just keep going, pick up willing little what`s her name and move to somewhere safe. A pleasant little diversion completely wrecked, T boned actually, by the fact that he turned the door knob and walked in.
