Warriors of Evan - The Dark Knights

The following is a transcript of Video and Audio recorded in October of 2066 in the The Gráinne Uaile, a tavern located in the Badlands Truckstop . It is the second in a series of interviews conducted by James Chisolm in an effort to capture the personalities and lives of the participants in Evans number one sport, DeathRacing.
===================================================================
Marvin wasn't a large man, neither was he what you would call short. He worked out but his build didn't lend itself to large muscle mass. His hair a matte brown and always unkempt. In many ways Marvin was decidedly average. His one defining feature was a scar than ran from just behind his left ear to the side of his mouth which he received from a giant scorpion when he was in the early years of his life. Though plain in looks, Marvin was anything but average in skill. He was a man who could turn his hand to any task you gave him and he would often perform it better than those who had spent many years specialising in it. He was always smiling that wry smile of his; like his experience in the field had taught him some joke that only he was in on.

That night at the bar, doing that interview - that was the last night many of the patrons in The Gráinne Uaile saw Marvin 'Nowhere' Noland. For shortly after the interview was done he went out scouting. One slip up caused it all to go wrong and Marvin ended up in the gladiator pits in Firelight, where he was torn to pieces by a dozen scorpions. It was not the death such a fine man deserved, but it was the one he got.

1.Can you tell me about the origins of your gang?

Heh, which one? We're quite isolated here at the truckstop and it seems to me that every time we get a new report in from the big boss man in The Vault we're flying a different flag with a different name on it. There's nobody here left who remembers back when we were called "Rezeak's Racers" but Ol' Leonard over there had an uncle that were part of it. Apparently they had to change the name because nobody knew who this Rezeak fella was and nobody knew how to race!

Then it was changed to 'Hades, Chronos and Erebus'. Oh yes. Very dramatic. The gang was working like a well oiled machine back then you see, everyone knew how to handle a gun and drive a car. Got to such a point when the bigwigs started thinking themselves as gods, so that's where that came from. Didn't last long.

A couple of dead gang leaders later and the gang was in tatters. With nobody to lead them they all just sat around and drank this piss they serve at the bars while the vehicles gathered dust. Months went by and no action was taken. Finally, Trendy Tom - he's the current leader - decided to stop moping and get us organised. He gave us a purpose, and we were reborn again as Gesta Non Verba.

That's about where I came in, because as Gesta Non Verba all the gang seemed to do was pick up new guys from various bars around Evan and pack them off to Basic Training. Apparently I didn't show much promise there and that's why people got to calling me Marvin 'Nowhere' Noland.

A couple of months into training though and the money ran out. So at that point there was nothing to do except drink and piss and eat, and that's what we did. There must have been some sort of plan in the pipleline though as eventually the big man came back with a sack full of cash and, being 'Trendy' Tom and all, came back with a theme.

"The Dark Knights." He said "Legend from the old world tells of a caped crusader fighting for justice in a broken city. That's what we're going to strive to be. Silent Guardians. Watchful protectors. The Dark Knights."

2.What motivates your members/leadership?

Eh, used to be it was all about the money and shiny new toys. We went down that road, got our money, got our fire engines, got our ambulances, and ultimately got bored. Now we just try to do what we can to stay in shape in case we come up against some real opponents. You know, ones that actually think.

3.Defining moment in your gangs history?

The most stand-out moment in my memory of the gang still has to be the camp war we took part in between The Vault and Asgard. Now now, I see that look in your eye and yes, those that remember it well will know that The Vault got spanked after our initial victory and went crying to the big man in the sky. But those battles that occurred on the plains near this very truckstop, side by side with brothers from other gangs we had known so long that they were like family, facing off against an enemy of skill unknown and tactics unpredictable. I'm telling you man the rush - wow - well, I'm getting tingly just thinking about it. It's done now though, and we're never likely to see anything of its sort again.

4.Biggest challenges your gang faces?

Well that depends on who you ask. If you ask our noble leader Tom he'll tell you that the biggest challenge is keeping the powers that be interested enough in our little world to keep the cash flow going. But me, well my biggest challenge is getting these rookies to stop crapping their pants every time they hear a bullet deflect off their roof and keeping them alive long enough to learn how to fire a rocket launcher straight.

5.Most popular member of your gang/least popular member?

Please. Everyone knows I'm the guy everyone wants to be. I can spot a needle in a haystack from 250m and then hit it with a Car Cannon without breaking a sweat. I'm respected by my equals and feared by those inferior to me. Oh, and I can fix up any engine that these snotbags blow holes into.

As for the least favourite? Well that's gotta be Gary 'Candi' Cain. He's a mutie who's been on his deathbed for years now. Used to be a half-decent gunner but he's a few cards short of a whole deck nowadays and is more of a hindrance than a help.

6.Favorite vehicle/weapon/setup?

Well here in Bandlands it's essential to bring the heavy stuff if you want to make it home without your intestines spilling out of your gut. So I like a Car Cannon/Rocket Launcher combo on the back of a buzzer. Leaves plenty of room for reloads and allows me to train up these invalids in the art of both gunnery and large gunnery.

Back in the safer regions of the world though there is nothing that can beat a good old sunrise. No way. Stick a car rifle and a machine gun on the front of one of those and you will be laughing as you tie your opponents in knots with dizzying speeds and tight turning circles. Oh, and we know a guy who paints them up real good for us here so we always look great before we blow up.

6.Favorite vehicle/weapon/setup?

Of course we love a good scout, who doesn't? It's the meat and potatoes of this world we're living in. But if you can rustle up enough victims to take part in a deathrace with a good choice of vehicle, then you are always guaranteed to have some close quarters, high octane, adrenaline fueled fun.

8.Biggest adversary/greatest ally?

Our greatest adversary has always been ourselves. We've never really gone out of our way to piss anyone off and so far that seems to have worked in our favour. But as I'm sure someone famous once said, you can't cure stupid. If you could I'm sure we'd all live a lot longer.

Our greatest ally, hmm. Well there have been many. Gangs led by Goat Starer and Ninesticks have always been good friends of ours, and we are forever indebted to them. However, we cannot ignore our brothers from Wolfsbane's gang Arbiters. I doubt many people will still remember them as they wandered out into the deep wastes long ago but they were the only ones who we ever fully trusted. No matter how many times one of our boys would 'accidently' put a hole in the side of an Arbiters BPU or 'accidently' push an Arbiters Buzzer into an unassailable oil pit in Texan, they would always stick by us and persist. There were great times many and often, and bad times equally so, but the Arbiters will always be our greatest ally.

9.What are you thinking about during combat?

You wanna know my motto? If you're thinking about, it you're doing it wrong. Combat is about action and reaction. The only thing you should be thinking about is staying alive long enough to think about other things.

10.How do you feel about your fellow gangers?

Most of them are inadequate, under-trained morons who couldn't bust a grape in a fruit fight. Occasionally one will show promise though. I'm working with a lad called Steve Austin who has shown himself to be a fair fighter when it comes to autodueling. I only hope he lives long enough to realise his potential.

11.Final thoughts?

Hmm? Oh, yeah. Someone start a war. A proper war. Not like what those pansies at the Alley did. Just don't involve us until someone is down and we can kick them in the nuts.
