The World of Evan According to Basher:

The infamous Scattered Hills map on the road to the Badlands Truckstop is in focus here in this issue.

Take some time and raise your camera view to scan the twists and turns of this road from a birds` eye view and marvel at the beauty of the terrain of this winding roadway.

The most prominent features are the steep mountainous pinnacles that border the roadway at some of the most critical points on the map. These pinnacles also drop into steep-sided chasms where the floor of these steep valleys are not visible because of the swirling radioactive mists shrouding the LONG drop to the bottom.

The road leading up to the first `twin-cantilever` bridge is a favorite ambush point for the many pirates roaming this area of Evan because of the mountains bordering the road on both sides. The road also `hides` a few hazards before the hard 90 degree turn onto the bridge entry. The light grey spots on both sides of the road will RIP tires from your chassis. The pirates know this and will chase you at full speed hoping you will keep the throttle down and lose your tires just as fast as they will chasing you.

The secret is:
SLOW DOWN to about 50 mph just as you get to the grey-bordered road and go no faster. YES you will take some tire damage, but not as much because of your slower speed. Hopefully you have outrun the pirates just far enough that they can`t shoot at you when you slow down.
They may get in range before you come to the bridge entry and take some pot-shots at you but most of their hits will be low damage hits because of the long range they will be firing at you from. Once you make the turn onto the bridge, keep an eye on the chat screen and watch the pirates tires FAIL as they disregard the 50 mph low-damage speed trying to chase you down. Hell!...... They may even pile up on each-other at the turn to the bridge.

Getting them to lose tires worse than you is the key to escaping more or less intact on this map.

DO NOT fall into the chasm the bridges cross.. You will NEVER get out!

Bladerunners Win Somerset Winter Warmup League

The Somerset Winter Warmup League finished, with Bladerunners taking the overall victory and a prize of $60000. The runners-up were 5ive Crew, and finishing in third place overall were Joels Bastards.

It`s An Everyday Job

By Burden

My name is Louis Paxton, and I am having the most fun I`ve ever had in my life.

I screamed in exhilaration as I spun around another corner, doing 120 miles per hour, scraping the sides of the opponent cars all around me. I was in the middle of the group.

Thinking fast, I jammed the steering wheel left, pressing another car and all the others around it straight into the wall. The door to the car on the far left hit the stone barriers hard and its armor all sheared away, leaving a gaping hole inside the door itself. The rest of the cars slammed into each other, fishtailing and swerving out of control. The result was like throwing a rock into a school of fish.

`Don`t get too crazy, will ya?!` Dexter Zehnner, my gunner, yelled next to me. `Some of us don`t have a death wish!`

`Just warming up for when the guns activate!` I yelled back over the roar of the motors. A huge, stupid grin was on my face.

My manoeuvre had left a big opening in the cars. Stepping on the pedal, I rushed through it. Third place now.

`Weapons activate in 15 seconds.` I heard over the speakers.

Dexter was smiling along with me; his hands gripped tight on the joystick which aimed the heavy machine-guns we had armed on the front and back of our car.

I attempted a PIT maneauver on the second place car. I got right beside its rear bumper, and turned to the right. However, the driver had seen me and with quick thinking, evaded me and slowed down, trailing right behind me. I could see his weapon bristled, intending to unload all his ammo into the rear of our car.

`Weapons activate in 10 seconds.`

`Dexter, see that car behind us?`

`Already on it, boss. With any luck, I`m going to lodge a nice big lump of lead right into the barrel of that gun.`

I scoffed. `Good luck with that. You`ll probably get us killed trying.`

`Hey, you said you were warmed up in your evasive manoeuvres, right?` He teased back at me.

`Weapons activate in 3.`

I licked my lips.

`2.`

Dexter wiped his sweaty palms, and grabbed the joystick again.

`1....`

Shots were heard everywhere, now. Bright flashes of gunfire shone off the armor of the cars around me. The loudest ones were behind me. My car`s rear gun, and the car behind me`s gun. You could literally hear the bullets riccocheting off of my rear armor, leaving huge dents, as if the bullets themselves were hungry to blast inside and rip me and Dexter apart.

Suddenly, the situation dawned on me, and I smiled. The recoil from the powerful weaponry being fired from my rear, added with the bullets from the car behind me propelling us forward, added to that car`s recoil pushing it back, we were losing them. Speeding away.

I quickly turned and used another car beside me as a meat shield for cover. He was busy firing at another car behind him.

`Hey, his armor was almost down!` Dexter complained.

I quickly glanced at the rear armor of our car. It looked like tinfoil, crumpled and stretched out again. `So was ours.` I said.

Another surge of adrenaline rushed through my body as I drove the steering wheel to the right, and pulled another sharp turn, doing a good 140 miles an hour now. The tires screamed in protest as I drifted through a 90 degree turn, literally trading paint with the car I hid behind.

I saw Dexter study the map of the track we had. He suddenly looked frantic. `Next turn is a hairpin! It`s dead ahead!`

`Perfect. Get ready!` I yelled. I was thinking faster than I could even follow.

`Ready for what?!` Dexter yelled.

`Front guns!`

`What? Fro-`

I turned left for a bit, leaving the cover of the oblivious car, and into my personal opponent`s view, then jammed the steering wheel right. Dexter and I were thrown sideways against the restraints of the racing seatbelts, as we turned a hundred and seventy degrees into the hairpin.

`NOW!` I commanded.

Just now understanding my plan, Dexter opened fire upon my enemy`s weakened front armor with a fresh, fully loaded heavy machine gun. With the handbrake activated, the recoil from our shots shook the car, shaking my head and further dizzying me, along with the cannon-sounding shots themselves.

My enemy`s already crumpled front armor took each hit with satisfying `thwump` noises. The half-pound bullets crashed into the wrinkles of the armor - shearing and tearing it away in chunks. Shrapnel flew everywhere. The people inside were terrified. One of them jumped right out of the thing, still going highway speed.

He would have lived. Unfortunately, the cars around him were going two times faster than highway speed.
I closed my eyes as the man`s body got mangled and crushed and broken. His maker didn`t even slow down, either. When I opened my eyes again, all that was left of the guy was a bloody, re-arranged body with four flat spaces around his torso and legs.

Dexter wasn`t done firing yet. If we let the other guy live, he`d spend the rest of his life trying to avenge his buddy. So Dex kept on shooting. Our enemy`s front armor wasn`t even existant anymore. Each shot pounded and broke off chunks of the now exposed engine, shortly setting it on fire.

`Crap, Louis, RUN!` He yelled at me. I literally stood on the pedal and gained speed again.

And I did. I ran like I never have before.

Then the poor driver we left for dead, and his car, exploded. The sheer force of the explosion caused by that powerful engine turned the remains of our rear armor to dust. I felt flames lick my back, but pull back before I got burned.

`Woo! How was that! One second later and that would have been us, man!` Dexter was cheering, half crazed by adreneline, and half crazed by shock. I didn`t answer him for a while.

`Well,` I finally said. `We got no rear armor. Lets let the other guys kill each other, then we can rush in and take the spoils of whatever`s left.`

Another pause. `Sounds good to me.`

I kept a steady speed of 60 miles per hour. Went through lap two, lap three, and finally lap four. It was all uneventful, besides the sad remains of the unlucky racers.

When we crossed the finish line, Dexter took a deep breath, then said, `Well, hope the hosts of whoever runs this wont be too mad at us.` He shut down the guns, and I stopped the car. We got out, and headed back towards the stands.

I suddenly broke into another stupid grin. `Hell, the crowd probably loved it!`

Firelight Mushrooms

Story by Damon Angel

`Make sure that canvas is in place.` Allan `I8ntIllegal` Lopez said, pointing towards one of the heavy sheets of material that hung across one of the gaps in what was left of the walls in their hideout. `We don`t need anyone finding us now...not this close to getting out of here.`

`I got it boss-man.` replied his Scout, Dwight Barrett. `I want out of here in one piece just as much as you do.`

Two years.... Lopez thought. Two years I`ve been sitting on my ass in this hell-hole, trying to stay hidden from the waster scum that inhabits FireLight. The former leader...what was his name? ...of Shattered-n-Bloody had thought it was a good idea to load up two newbs, stuff them into the gang`s only Moray, and point them south.

It was no wonder their current Leader, Julie `The Horror` Baca, had capped his worthless hiney and fed him to the ghouls for Friday night entertainment.

Allan cleared his throat, took a breath and turned around on the rough wooden stool he`d made; one of the few pieces of `furniture` they had in their hidey-hole. `We can get some shut-eye now, `cause we have to go drag that FOJ inside when it gets dark...say, about 3 a.m.? Most of the puss bags that pass for people around here should be asleep, dead or passed out by then.`

He still couldn`t believe it. Nightmares of their trip south still woke him up. He needed his sleep tonight...he hoped his dreams would be of that little hottie wench he`d met at the bar yesterday. They didn`t get many chances to get out of their cavern. Each foray out into the septic-system the low lifes called home around here was an adventure...and not the good kind, either.

He leaned back against the front fender of their Moray and closed his eyes, remembering.

The Moray leapt out of the Shattered-n-Bloody warehouse, the big 4L`s torque causing the tires to spin crazily on the concrete floor...they squealed out onto the sand; rooster tails taking the place of smoke and rubber. He could still remember the barely audible yells of encouragement coming from his old ganger-buddies. The 4L rumbled each time he floored the accelerator as he feathered it trying to get some purchase on the packed sand of Somerset`s `streets.`

With a wave and a `thumbs up,` he pointed the nose of the Moray at the wide-open gate leading out into the farmlands around SS and bid goodbye to civilization...or what passed for it. His partner, Dwight Barrett, was the navigator and scout for this trip. Neither of them had chit for experience. Why they`d been chosen for this trip in such an expensive chunk of equipment, neither knew. Answers wouldn`t be forthcoming, either.

The roads out of Somerset were pretty clear of trouble. They`d had to outrun a couple wastelanders in ungainly pick-ups after they`d cleared the developed area outside SS and the transit to Elmsfield had been about the same. They`d see a cloud of dust on the horizon, find someplace elevated to look out over the land; try to hunker down and not get seen, then take off when the coast was clear.

They had plenty of supplies to last them until BadLands Truck Stop, which was a good thing because when they saw Elmsfield fade away in their rearview mirror, all hell had broken loose. The bad guys seemed to be everywhere! Twice they were ambushed in the first 100 kliks outside Elms`...saved only because the Moray was stripped down to chassis and engine. He hadn`t had much time behind the wheel of anything before taking off from Somerset, but he had learned fast! And that was a good thing, because the first time he`d had to push the Moray over 100 to escape a Vampyre and its misguided occupants, he`d nearly lost control of the Moray every time he moved the steering wheel.

Neither he nor Dwight said anything after these encounters, as both pretended to be wiping sand out of their eyes; and both knew it was tears from the fear. Lopez had always thought he was a bad ass kinda guy...but spending 24/7 running from an entire world that wanted to eat you [ sometimes, literally! ] took its toll on the nerves. He came to understand quickly what people meant by `pucker-factor.`

The long and horrific drive across the scarred wastes between BadLands and Firelight had taken a toll on the Moray and on their spirits. At times, it felt like the ground around them was going to rise up and consume them well before the marauding hordes that seemed to be around every jagged corner would. Twice they`d had to hole up on top of a small escarpment to change tires. The ground had shredded them as they tried to put distance between themselves and the crazed minions that harrassed them every mile.

When FireLight had finally come into view, they were on the ragged remains of their last set of `skins,` with 6 carloads of sikkos hot on their ass. Barrett had been reduced to a blubbering baby...screams mixed with sobbing every time a round from their pursuers` weapons banged off the shot-up armor plating of the Moray. Hell, he`d pissed all over himself 10 seconds into the chase. Low on fuel, running almost on the rims with the smell of radiator fluid and burning rubber filling the inside of the Moray, Lopez had known they didn`t have much `run` left in them...so when he saw the gates leading into FL, he`d almost yelled like a kid getting a present on Christmas morning!

Abusing the last shreds of tread left on the Moray`s reinforced tires, he`d power-slid the performance car right through the gates and caught a glimpse of a sedan being not so lucky as it careened into the hardened town walls...bounced off and caught fire...slewing left and right as its driver tried to regain control. Smiling like he`d just `gotten some,` he`d lifted his foot off the gas as the Moray straightened out and rolled into the center of the main `drag.` Feeling the big car slow, Barrett had ventured a tentative look out the armored window slit on his door...and screamed like a girl with joy, seeing what they both thought was civilization wrapped around them.

That lasted all of about two seconds before the first dirt-caked scumbag in range of the Moray opened up on them with an SMG...rotted teeth bared behind stretched lips as the crazed maniac ran at them, spraying rounds everywhere. For a second after that, Lopez didn`t know what to do. Barrett was still screaming, but it wasn`t with joy anymore...and he looked over to yell at him to shut up when he saw why...their pursuers hadn`t stopped outside the walls.... In fact, the bastards at the gates had opened them wide to let the last 4 of them straight through! The guy operating the gates was standing there waving them along!

A loud bang caught his attention to the left...when he snapped his head in that direction, there were two more `locals` firing at them. The bang had been from a rifle round...he could see the guy cocking the weapon...a small trail of burnt gunpowder smoke wafted from the waving barrel.

He`d floored it...praying there was enough fuel left to get them the hell out of wherever it was they were. The Moray`s 4L had roared and the rear end had skittered to the left as the torque tore the last of the tread off the rear tires and the Moray leapt forward...heading straight for the end of the road before them. Lopez looked in horror as he saw two guys trying to slide the gates at the other end of the road closed. More and more human garbage rolled out of the dark recesses of the buildings along the street...weapons in hand...all aimed at them!! He cut the wheel left...the `thud` of a body being driven below the charging vehicle gave him slight cause for some merriment. Seeing that the nutcase behind the wheel of their target wasn`t adverse to adding them to the road surface caused a few of the crazies firing at them to duck back into cover. The speedo` climbed fast...rocketing past 100 as he kept the nose of the Moray pointed at the ever-narrowing gap between death and freedom. With a shower of sparks and a scream from one of the guys trying to close the gates, the Moray slid through and headed out into the wastes...again.

He`d kept his foot `in it` until the lights of the place had faded in the ever-present fog that seemed to blanket the area. Easing down, they`d spun back towards the place...since they didn`t know what was out there and also because he`d felt the 4L shudder a bit. The fuel gauge was pegged on `E.`

They`d managed to drive it up onto a small ridge on the outskirts of what had turned out to be FireLight. Keeping below the crest, they`d climbed out of the Moray and eased up to look down on the cess-pool they now seemed stuck at.

They`d stayed there for two days and nights before they`d been able to get down into some of the ruins and find a place just broken-down enough to not attract occupants but with enough room inside to hide them and the Moray. At about 4 a.m. on the third night, they`d pushed the Moray up over the hill`s crest, jumped in and rode her down in neutral...plowing through the gangle of brush, bent and broken rebar and concrete that formed the western wall of their hideout. The next month they`d spent making sure the place looked just like it did before they moved in...going so far as to sneak out at night to use dry brush to erase the tire tracks on the hillside.

What had followed was two years of fear and loathing as they tried to get parts to fix the ragged 4L and the Moray`s torn-up armor...all the while hiding from the constant flow of human garbage the place seemed to attract. Getting messages out was not an option.

Six months they`d spent before they had managed to be able to disguise themselves enough to wander into town. Nobody paid them any particular mind...which meant they only had to kill a few scummers on their intermittent trips to the bar, or what passed for a shop in this place.

They`d gotten their first message to Shattered-n-Bloody a year after that. That`s when they`d found out Julie had taken over...and how large the gang had grown from when it was just them and a handful of others.

Everyone was surprised they were still alive...as were they. Julie sent word that the S-n-B crew had cirlced up in Elmsfield and had spent the last year reorganizing and building up their stable of gangers and vehicles.

Barrett had sent their last message a month ago. They`d managed to get hold of an FOJ. The Moray had been repaired back to full capability and they`d had several discussions about which, if any, weapons they should try to get hold of for their escape from this madhouse of a town. They`d settled on the FOJ...it would discourage pursuit...and mess up those crazy enough to keep after them. The Moray`s speed would take care of the rest. They had enough supplies to get them back to BadLands...and hopefully enough ammo for the FOJ.

They knew there was a small contingent of Shattered-n-Bloody`s gang in BL. They could dump the Moray and get into something with a bit more offensive `bite` for the trip back to Elms. He felt his eyes watering up just thinking about being `back in the world.`

`I feel ya, broheem....` he heard Barrett say, feeling the pressure of a hand being placed on his shoulder. `Ain`t no big thang. We`re going home.`
