 By Manglemybadger I whimpered like a child throughout the two days of solid reading, unable to put it down as the tale gets more and more desperate and dark. I think the players that don`t know about it yet would love it. I`ve got a book recommendation for all of you high-octane, bullet-eating dust bunnies. It`s called The Road, it`s written by Cormac McCarthy and I am sure more than a few of you have read it. Some frothing fans of Dark Wind might find it poor recommendation, as nowhere within its covers is a muscled-up, rumbling death machine sporting rockets up to the rear view or a single episode of extreme road rage. All of that would have been nice, but it is not needed. What you get instead is a post-apocalyptic tale of a father and a son, trying, on foot, to make it south before the harsh winter sets in and the old man dies. They have a belly half-full of food and a revolver with two remaining bullets. Set in the uncomfortably near future, the true cause of the apocalypse is never identified. All we know is everything burned. Something has killed all the animals. Something has poisoned all the crops. What is left of humanity eats what is left of the fresh food. When that runs out, they eat the canned food. When that gets scarce, they start eating each other. The father and the son set out into a lawless, hungry world of cannibalism and brutality to find a safer, easier place to live. You fathers out there might find that underneath the savage and the violent narrative there exists a moving and realistic portrayal of a father`s dedication to his son. When forced, like most of us, the father will do everything in his power to keep his son`s soul from the clutches of a broken, hateful world. In a place where babies are openly roasted on a BBQ spit and people will slash your throat over a half-can of sardines, the task seems impossible, but his immeasurable love for his son drives him onward. For those unfamiliar with Cormac`s writing style, there are a few neat grammatical things he does that a word-geek like me must mention. He never uses apostrophes in his contractions, so `can`t` becomes `cant`, something the rest of the writing world should consider. Additionally, there are no quotations around a speaking character`s words - they just speak. For me, this conscious disregard for punctuation in all of his stories help quicken the pace and convey the desperation of each story. Also, if my memory serves me correctly I read it two years ago there is not a single proper name in the book. The man is simply the man. The boy is the boy. If you haven`t read it, and do not have the time to read it, it is being released as a movie, so you`ll have that, at least. If you do read this one and like it, you`ll probably dig his other stuff. Quite a few of his books manage to perfectly paint the confounding simultaneous mix of despicable savagery and vulnerability we all carry with us as we walk down our own roads. This is my favorite post-apoc book of all time - it has the violence, the horror and the desperation in quantity and quality. Every page heaps on more of the hopelessness and despair, and yet within it remains emotional tale that left me weak-kneed and watery-eyed from brutal cover to cover.
