A Scout`s Tale

By Fourhand

Dexter`s place never closed, there were only lulls in the action. Most nights the caterwauling and fighting and singing and dancing didn`t stop until around sunrise but this night was different. The party had slowed early and those who could stumbled out of the bar and those who couldn`t slept propped up against whatever they could find, walls, tables and even other patrons became makeshift beds. A couple of tables were still alive with muted conversations and quiet card games. Even the ancient jukebox in the corner seemed to sense the mood of the place and for the last hour or so had played only old blues records from a bygone era. At the long bar that was usually crowded sat only one person, and behind it only Dexter who slowly cleaned glasses or wiped the bar absently while eyeing the short lean woman who sat nursing a beer she had ordered much earlier in the night. She would take a sip every now and then but mostly she just sort of sat there nibbling from a bowl of peanuts while staring off into space. Cautiously Dexter approached.

`I know that beer done got warm,` Dexter said in a thinly veiled attempt to get a conversation started, `Hows about you let me get you a cold one.`

`Nah, this will be fine,` she said, `I need to get going anyway.`

`I see by the patch on your shoulder that you are with that Hellfish bunch. Which one are you?`

`The name is Molly Garcia but most people just call me `Mooch`.`

`Well `Mooch` it is a pleasure to meet you.`

She looked up and gave a small smile. `The pleasure is all mine I am sure.`

`Say Mooch, something seems to have gotten you down, what`s the matter?`

`Ahh, it`s nothing.` She paused. `It`s, It`s just, you know, scouting ain`t easy sometimes.`

`Oh?`

`I ran into a group of slow muties today. Well, a small village is more like it, ten or twelve of them all living in what was left of a town, not more than four houses still standing and I use the term `standing` loosely.`

`Nasty buggers those mutants I hear.`

`Yeah, usually they are. Actually they always are. But these, these were different somehow, still mean but different. I think they were just trying to protect what was theirs.`

`Nah, those muties live in caves and stuff. They don`t care where they live as long as the wind ain`t hittin` them.`

`Yeah, I used to think the same thing.`

`What`s changing your mind?`

`I was out trying to find a new road to camp we are affiliated with out west of here. I come up over a rise and caught some air, as my little Dustup landed it blew a tire. I killed the engine and got out to patch it up. When the dust finally settled and everything got quiet I started hearing some sounds.` She paused to take a small sip of her beer. `I thought it was, I think they were laughing Dexter.`

Dexter`s furrowed his brow and set down the glass he had long ago forgot he was holding.

`Yeah, I know it sounds crazy, but, anyway, my curiosity got the better of me and I went to investigate. As I topped a large mound of dirt I spotted the little grouping of houses. I guess when I saw them I stumbled or something, I don`t remember, all I know is that I kicked some rocks down the hill and one thing lead to another and before I knew it a full on rock slide was giving away my position. I saw the first one peek his head, sloped and ugly as it was, around the corner of the nearest house. He let out the longest and angriest howl I have ever heard in my life, and then he began running at me. After no more than two steps he was joined by another and then another, before I knew what was happening there were six of the loathsome things charging at me. About the time they reached the bottom of the embankment I stood on I had unsheathed my shotgun. By the time I had cocked it and chambered the first round the leader of the group was almost halfway up the slope. I fired.` She stopped to take another sip of beer and eyeball a drunk as he left the bar angrily after loosing a card game.

`The bulk of the buckshot hit him where your neck stops and your shoulder starts.` She pointed to the place on her own body. `Right here, over the collarbone, tore most of it out. He fell back and knocked over two of his buddies following him. One of the ones he knocked over busted his head open on a rock as he fell. As I cocked the gun again another mutie reached me, I shot and the top of his head exploded into a thick pink mist. The next I shot square in the stomach, the next, the chest. By now the mutant knocked down when I killed the first was making his way back up to me. Poor bastard never stood a chance, I shot him right in the nose and his face turned into a dark gaping hole.`

Dexter caught himself breathing hard caught up in the excitement of the story. `You don`t tell the story like you were too messed up about killing those uglies.`

`Those guys? Nah, It`s not them that got me staring at the walls of this joint at four of a morning.`

`Then what is it?`

`It`s what I found when I went down to look where they came from, I didn`t want anymore of them freaks sneaking up on me as I fixed my tire.`

`What`d you find?`

`A wom-, err, a female,` a long pause, `and little ones.`

Dexter jumped a little. `Everybody knows them freaks can`t breed. Hell, I`ve only heard of two or three people ever seeing a female.`

`Well nobody told these ones that. There was that female and four young ones all huddled up in that house. She looked right at me.`

`What`d you do?`

`I locked the door, set the place on fire and walked away.`

Dexter said nothing.

Molly looked up, leaned back from the bar and took a deep breath. `Well, you asked and that is my story. And that is what has gotten me down, as you put it.

Dexter thought about it for a moment and as he turned to walk away down the bar he said, `If it makes you feel any better you was probably doing them a favor.`

`Yeah I guess. Thanks for the beer and the ear Dex.` She threw a few coins down on the bar and turned to walk out.

`Anytime Mooch`

As she left the bar she felt a little better for having gotten the story told but as she turned and headed down the street she could swear she heard the sound of a distant and ghostly laughter.
