Darkwind
New Website

As you will have noticed, the new website is now live.
It is recommended that you clear your browser cache to make sure that modified css and js files are downloaded.

Please post any problems here: I'm sure there's quite a few small ones such as colours etc. but hopefully nothing too severe. I have tested as much as I can using Firefox, IE, and Safari.

The menus are dynamic, btw. You can bookmark friends' gangs and have them stored in your gangs menu. Whenever you view a vehicle or character of your own its added to the menu so you can find them again easily during the current session.

When I am in the lobby, and try and open a second window by hittin gteh forums or gang buttons, it says that I am not logged in on the new window opening. Using IE 7.

Edit - It appears that when the new window opens, it stays logged in and logs out the other one.

OK now? IE is slightly annoying in that every page with a transparent background has to declare it...

Will there be an option available to continue to use the website in "classic" format? Some of the older dogs here aren't very good at new tricks....

Otherwise, looks great!

I toyed with the idea, but lots of the code has edits so this would mean future changes would have to be applied into two separate places, which I'm not keen on.

I copied the old site here though, and it should mostly work (apart from some missing images, decals, custom skins):

.. but I don't want to maintain it as future changes are added

the six drop-down menus at the top.
It would be nice if clicking on places took you to Somerset.

Everyone starts there.

Or could be configurable ?

Looking good Sam. THis is going to be a big shift you guys, but I predict you'll be quite happy with it once you have found your usual focus.

The font used in the drop-downs is too bolded I believe. I'm in Firefox on a Mac. Looks like bolded Impact.

I was envisioning all my vehicles listed under Vehicles, listed by town in dynamic spring-out submenus. Is this still planned?

I'll get you that new style sheet I've been talking about. The center stuff needs to be updated too. Cream doesn't fit chrome.

Yep, and thanks for the great design BW!

It's not bold actually, but I noticed that's how it looked on my Mac also. Must be the default Impact font on the Mac at fault. Maybe we need to use a different font?

Not sure. Keeping the dynamic menu populated correctly as you buy, sell and loot could be a bit tough.

Aye, yep. Thanks :)
The centre colour is best done as a one-pixel GIF, if that's ok?

I'm getting some pages, like this one, with the old cream page background and others, like Squads with no background. None isn't working well, and cream is icky. How about we make that background pix either a semi-transparent PNG or a 4 pix gif with every other pix trans?

I'll send you one to try, just tell me GIF or PNG.

On some pages, I kept the cream background because of the black/dark fonts that were overlaying it.

You don't like the 'no background' pages? One of the benefits of them is that they no longer visually stretch right down to the bottom of the iframe

Well, I like it although I wouldn't mind a return of the left hand sidebar being like it was, and the fact that the forum just kind of sits in the middle with edges cut off feels weird to me, but I suppose it's better.
The lefthand sidebar does look a little bare though, like the browser didn't load an image or some such.

When at the somerset marketplace, and buying 'Bulk goods' the text for the goods your gang owns is in the same colors as the background. So you can't see it, just needs to be color changed.

Has anyone else seen problems with the browser Back function? I don't think I know any consistent steps for it, but several times today, back just stops working. Both the browser command and the new in-page << button. The browser continues to show that I'm at the newest page in browser history, even if I drop down the back button history and jump back several pages.

If I click one of the menus like Events or Characters, that works, but once dead, back doesn't start working again. It looks like a problem with the browser, but I don't remember ever seeing it on the old site (or any other).

I'm using Firefox 3.0.11.

Do we no longer have a missions page? I can't seem to find where that info is displayed.

Same here, can't find my missions area.

My opinion is I liked the side task bar better. Everything was already their in front of you to chose from without using a pulldown menu.

When we clicked "gameplay" the events diary was there with towns, leagues, venus etc.. listed under one page that stayed open. Now we have to go to multiple drop down menues to get to the same areas that were originally in front of us to chose from. I now have to keep going up to the "places" menu to open a new town, why? Before the towns were laid out in front of us and even when we were in town, the shortcuts to the other towns were just a click away in the same window.

In the old gui, when I went to my gang page, everything was already at the top of my screen that I needed.

Now I need to go to differnet pulldown menus and select what I want from a list. One menu to pick my gang, another to check my events and leagues and another to find my camps.

Before when we were at a town shop, we could view and modify cars on the same page. Now we open a new window for each car we select, then when we are done we have to close each window. Why? Same goes for characters too.

I'm not sure about other players, but I rarely need to go to my "vehicles" page that we now have at the top as a main choice. I view, repair and modify my cars from the town shops and look at the squads I have to see what's where and the cars auto show when clicked in the dropdown when adding cars to the squad.

Why did we go from a simpler gui to this version?

Don't get me wrong, I like the new background. I just don't get making the player go through extra steps they did not have to do before.

Sorry, but this just looks messy for no reason.

OK, I just added back the row of buttons at the top of your gang page - this addresses the missing 'missions' page as well as some of your concerns about usability, LF?

The left menu can certainly be improved some more. Maybe it could provide a way of switching between different sets of links (1. current default set; 2. list of towns and active leagues etc.). Do you see those three unused buttons at the bottom of the menubar? Maybe one could cycle through menus, one could cycle through website skins, and one could do something else?

The two main reasons behind the popups are (1) so you can keep a car/character onscreen while doing other stuff and have it easily to hand rather than having to go find it again - this certainly suits my own experience of getting ready for scouting where I forget stuff and have to switch from map to car to mechanic shop repeatedly, (2) to get around the problem of frames-inside-frames where you sometimes ended up trying to edit stuff in a ridiculously small space and had to deal with scrollbars etc.

When modifying a car (adding/removing weapons, armor, etc), when you click "Vehicle Details" after making a change, a seperate popup window pops up. If you do not change anything, you don't get a seperate popup, only if you do add or remove something to/from the car.

A few things to explain here.

We've divided gameplay function away from marketing function. The left is for research, roleplay and to get people into the game. If you're a player, however, everything you need is across the top.

The menu approach takes us away from a metaphorical navigation type that leaned on concepts of towns and places being tied to function. If this is working (and other than a couple comments it seems well received) we can continue this trend.

We've reduced the number of clicks to get a scout ready dramatically, primarily in the interest of making it easier to understand for new players. You don't have to hit Gameplay, then Squad, etc. It's just right there, one click, at the top.

Most top level menus have function at the menu. Click Places and you go to Somerset, no pull-down needed. Click Characters at the top and you get your characters. Squads...you get your Squads. Wait and choose "Search" and you get to search for other Squads. Clustering like tasks is more intuitive for new players. For you old dinosaurs you'll just have to adapt and keep making suggestions.

Menu contents and their functions are under discussion.

I just wanted a place to view mission info - to me the most natural place would be under the new "events" tab.

I'd actually much rather see it added in to the new system and have the old bars removed again.  It seems redundant and could be confusing:  "do I click this Events tab or that Events tab?"

Other than that I'd really like to see something done with the component menus when you swap kit on your cars.  The very long and narrow fields for engines, weapons, ammo, etc mean you have to scroll a lot to get back to your car every time you change something.  In the case of ammo, or if I want detail on some components, it also means side-scrolling (which seems silly when there is so much lateral space to work with).  This was a issue with the old site and one I was hoping to see ameliorated.

But otherwise I AM really happy with the new site!  :D

I'm really happy with the new design. Especially the streamlining, making things easier to access is a huge improvement.

One thing II would like to see is to have the character list split into sections for each location. Similar header that you have under your leader for each town you have people in and possibly one header for traveling gangers.

Foul, Lugal, I think those sound great to me too. We'll see what Sam says.

Wounded, do you think clicking on location so they sort by that is not sufficient? You'd like to see them always by location, then by whatever you rank next? I've always thought location should be a permanent categorization, comparing everyone at once has little use for me.

On an aesthetic note, anyone else getting some fall-apart on the right column? Like the content is too wide and breaking the graphics? I'm getting a repeat of the column graphic (and I'm still getting a white vertical stripe where it should be transparent, Sam). In the upper right corner at fully expanded I get blank background too... anyone else?

I don't think the Darkwind graphic is expanding to fit as intended, nor is the center content. They are both leaning to the right. I had intended for the top menu to stay centered with the DarkWind graphic as well, is that possible?

Thank you for the hard work.

UI issue #1:
Redesign the way players add their own assets to other gangs' squads. The current system is very complicated.

UI issue #2:
Dynamically compute and display the travel range when adjusting fuel tank size. I wish I never had to memorize 0.0000101*weight*fuel units. Please spare future players this useless formula.

UI issue #3:
Dynamically compute and display the total armor points when adjusting armor points. You make me feel like a total dork when I break out the calculator to figure out whether I've added too much or too little armor. Please show this on the screen.

Bug #1:
Selling a vehicle should remove it from any open squad list.

Bug #2:
Selling a vehicle should remove it from any open vehicles list.

That's exactly how I would like to see them, always separated by the location. Having 50-ish people in one big list gets a bit messy. It works, but imho it would be more useful and much easier on the eyes if they were organized by locations, much in the way that vehicles are. However, unlike with the vehicles, characters in all locations should always be visible at once.

Is this too much work to put in? Does someone have any reasons why this would be a bad idea?

I suffer considerable delay when scrolling down the screen as the background graphic gets shuffled. Probably due to the limited power of my graphics card on my laptop more than anything but would definitely like an option to have a clear/neutral background.

A couple of problems:

(Running Safari 3.2.1 on Mac OSX 10.4.11)

When clicking "My Gang" or "Forums" in the client, the website sometimes fails to log me in, telling me that I have no gang or not allowing me access to the Subscriber's section of the forum, etc. So I have to log in manually which is annoying but doable. I never had this problem with the old site.

I like to open forum topics in new windows so that I can just open everything that's new and go through them, closing them when I'm done. This, however, now gives me a white background rather than the picture and deletes the side menu bar, new top menu bar (but not the old buttons), file level guide (i.e. Darkwind >> Announcements >> Important Announcements, etc), and, most importantly, it does not show what page of the thread I am on. This means that I don't know if I'm missing posts on previous pages, and, even if I can deduce that I am, I can't get back to them without re-opening the DW forum page and navigating back to the thread that I'm in.

I don't particularly care for it. :)

It probably works well for large gangs, much like the location breakdown works well for gangs with lots of vehicles, but it introduces a level of complexity I personally, with a small gang, have no need for.

If it could be optional that would be great; I've already trained myself to click the 'Entire List' button when my vehicle list reverts to By Location, so I'm sure I could manage yet another click.

Wow, a lot of good ideas and open issues here.

A potential solution for both Characters and Vehicles then would be to have View All and View By Town as two options under the pull-down.

I'm still voting for current squads listed under the Squads pull-down.

Metro's got some awesome points.

I'm pondering a dynamic menu under the current top menu that changes out for Forum or Gameplay...or could a simple reorg of the pull-downs hit the majority of everyone's needs. Any thoughts?

Also, when registering for an event in the client, if I decide to register on the website and click on the "Webpage" button in the client registration window, there is no way to register (it doesn't show the car/driver pulldowns nor the register button on the webpage).

I imagine that this is related to the first problem mentioned above.

Furthermore, I imagine that that problem is related to the fact that, even with the old website, I had problems wherein I would go to the site by typing the address in the browser and would typically have to either re-sign in or just click the forums link to log in, despite the fact that I have set my computer to stay logged into the site.

The way I would want it to be implemented is different to the way that the vehicle lists are now. No buttons to be pressed, no lists to be opened. Just simply exactly what we have now, but with smaller headings alike the one we have between the leader and the rest of the gangers now: "Your gangers in somerset", "your gangers in Firelight"

If there are no gangers in a given place the heading doesn't show or if that's too much work, then the list under the heading would just be empty.

This would still allow us to see all gangers at once, but would also have the information organized and therefore it might be easier on the eyes.

If it is possible to implement the suggested version and keep the old one, I would prefer that the selection of which one to use would be selectable from user preferences rather than selected each time you visit the page.

Using the current sort by Location heading doesn't meet this need?  Or are you wanting to be able to sort by Location and another variable?

What I wouldn't want was to have a forced sorting category that I couldn't change - eg having my gang broken up by Location, so that when I hit sort by Gunnery, they sorted by Gunnery skill per each town.

I have sixty-one characters - and there are certainly much larger gangs out there - and they don't all fit on the screen.  I need to have what I'm looking for appear collected in the same place.

What about instead of reformating the page, add the ability to sort by more than one variable?  Even just two, a primary and secondary, would readily meet your needs, and would still give everyone the freedom to customize it to meet theirs.

Personally, I'd like a simple drop down filter box for location. So I instantly see who's in a location and still sort as in the current system. Adding in a "show only fully fit" characters option would make it better still. While I'm wishing for a moon on a stick, you could do the latter more flexibly (and with potential use for other stats) by having a simply boolean filter like =100, >50.

Multiple sorting criteria would also be nice as suggested earlier by Lugal.

Yes, I would like to have the ability to sort the characters i have, say, in Somerset by gunnery skill without the people in other locations messing up the list. The reason I would want the headers between the towns is just to make it easier on the eyes.

Of course sometimes it's important to sort the whole gang so the format should definitely be optional. Like I suggested, I would like to have the preference to select which type of character list will be opened as default.

Ah yeah, someone else mentioned that. Problem is mostly when you open a new browser window from the game client, it logs all the others out?

That's not it, Sam (at least not for me). The first window opened from the game client is often not logged in, and I've not been logged out of a page that I had already been logged in to.

Yes, this is what happens for me

I've only had two issues, and only one worth noting...

1) sometimes I have "white" around the main frame that goes away when I scroll - no biggie

2) (this is the reason for the post) when I hover Places and try to click My Camps (List) nothing happens. I can click My Camps (Map) and as soon as it starts to load I can click My Camps (List) and it works fine.

Not sure why, but using the site now gives me a splitting headache after about 10 minutes.

Maybe it's the background image, or the fonts, or the color contrast between the background and the center frame, I don't know, but whatever it is has made it extremely unpleasant to do anything on the website.

A very big bummer as it means I have to cut my forum participation and camp and gang management down to virtually nil, and my playing time to something close to that. :( :(

Such is life, I guess. :(

There doesn't seem to be a page list at the bottom of the topics anymore. IE: No way to go to the second page by clicking at the bottom like we used to could.

Are you speaking of the forum pages, Four? If so, this is a problem I mentioned above but only seems to happen when a thread is opened in a new window (and is true on the top and bottom). This is a big issue with me.

Marrkos, I got rid of the background by loading a Firefox plugin called 'adblock plus', and blocking the background image. After installing the plugin, you just right-click the background image and block it from the menu.

It improved things for me. Maybe it will improve things for you.

I'll give that a try.  I'm experiencing other issues because of it though.  :stare:

I sent you a PM so I don't pollute this thread with 'troubleshooting' stuff. :)

Yeah, That's what happens to me. I didn't see your post because it was a pain inthe but to go thru all the pages.

Yea it's the red back ground that's pops too much imo, having something more neutral grayish would be nice kinda like the old style

I'm going to come back and review all your comments in a day or two, after getting the new maps in-game.

In terms of background image, the best solution might be to give a few alternatives for you to choose from..?
-- if anyone has any good images to propose, go ahead! -- only thing is they must be at least 1600 pixels wide, to avoid ugly tiling on large monitors
-- I can also darken the default image some more, if that would help? I think the dark red colour matches nicely with the greys blacks and silvers of the skin itself, but if it's unusable that's not good

A lot of the text is brown, and setting it on the background makes it practically invisible, so maybe some brighter ones or fixing up the text colors?

I suffer considerable delay when scrolling down the screen as the background graphic gets shuffled. Probably due to the limited power of my graphics card on my laptop more than anything but would definitely like an option to have a clear/neutral background.

I got the same problem in Linux.

using the adblock plus plugin to hide the background fixes the problem. but adds a new problem.

You get a white background and white text :-)....

Having an option to delete the background and setting it to grey would be best.

i also hate that mac popup. I'm using linux and not mac. what is that red yelloish ball doing on the top of my window?
And because it is javascript it scrolls really slow.
It also opens to small.

A normal popup that can open in a tab would be a lot easier.

I would prefer if the vehicle data popup opened a new window (even if it's the same small size and on top of the previous) than to open a javascript window. This is simply so that I stop hitting cmd-w to close the vehicle data window and end up closing the one behind it as well accidentally.

If this causes other issues, though, I'd prefer to keep it as it is than change it to the old method.

I'll second this one... I also learned REAL FAST to NOT use CMD-W. :)

I will say though that my old way of keeping a tab open for forums, one for gang, one for camp and one for town has changed. Only once did I find myself with two tabs. Navigation is so much easier now I just use the one tab. (the "two tabs" example was when I was about to auto repair some stuff and I wanted to unload the CPS, Scrap, looted ammo, etc. before hitting auto restore - doing this from the vehicle frame is not "nice" with more than one TYPE of cargo)

EDIT: the reason I second this one is because I'm a keyboard person first and mouse person second. It's second nature for me to use keyboard shortcuts. :)

Another reason is that you can middle click a vehicle, person and it opens a tab. and like we all know you can close tabs with "<ctrl> W"

Safari 4.0.2. The logouts occur in between visits to the website, without me opening any windows from the game client. It seems the cookies expire within half an hour, or so.

Quick update - seems this only happens from Forums. From town or gang pages it works fine.

Hope that helps. :)

is there any chance that we could have veicles displayed beside the list (where the skins and decals are) not in a pop up on the vehicles page. that pop up makes for fiddly scrolling.

I agree. I find myself opening up the old website whenever I have to do any work on my cars. The popup is ok when selling looted cars, since you don't leave your vehicle page, but other than that, it can be a hassle just reloading your ammo.

Also, is it just me or if you are in the market and you or the market does not have anything of what you want to buy or sell, the text is white and cannot be seen on the white background? I have to highlight the text with my mouse to be able to read it.

Still love the game though Sam, so I'm not going anywhere!  :D

I like the feature that lets me tag a gang to the Gang tab at the top of the new site: I'd like to be able to do the same thing with squads owned by other players. We all have our own little scouting circles :)

Not sure about others, but I've blocked the background image (as detailed in another thread), so the main background of the site is white for me.

Of course, most (all?) of the text is white as well, so I'm doing a lot of 'Select All' actions to get the text highlighted so I can see it.

Ah, gotcha. Maybe I need to implement alternative backgrounds, and/or a user-definable darkening of the background?

Sorry, can't help you there. :(

If I knew what it is about the background that is causing my troubles I could point you in a direction.  Unfortunately, all I know is that it hurts.

SAM... i think he means if you go into the market in a town... click trade with NPCs bulk goods the box in the middle of the screen is white and the the text telling you how many car parts or whatever is also white so you cant see it.

Ah yeah, that's true on IE (not Firefox). OK now? Are there any other pages you have noticed it? (IE is a bit of trouble)

aye Sam thats fixed it...

only other thing that is still bothering me is the way it opens your car i a seperate windon from the vehicles tab rather than replacing the list of decals and skins on the right (as it does in the squads page when you chose a vehicle).

its just so fiddly.. i cant expand it properly and i can only ever see a tiny bit of the info about the car at any given time...

might be just me though :-)

Sam, looking at the source I don't see background specified as anything in particular. Perhaps if you just threw this at the top of the page?

body {background-color: #000;}

Is there any work being put into fixing the log out problem when opening a new tab in Firefox? every time I swap tabs I need to re-login.

Gets annoying when you want to look at different pages back and forth, such as opening up someones gang page to set up for a scout, and going back over to look at your own cars/gangers to get setup.
